Guardian interview with Janet Mock

This is what Simon Hattenstone says about transwoman Janet Mock:

"Mock is gorgeous – tall, curvy, with brown, almond-shaped eyes, a perfect smile and cheek-bones so high you could hoist a flag on them."

I was surprised. The Guardian is usually careful not to write about women's appearance in a way that objectifies them.

Fucking sick bastard 😡

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 13:02

Janet Mock is quite pretty. What does that have to do with anything?

If male journalists would stop writing articles with their penises that would be great. It's not really ideally designed for typing, guys.

BeUpStanding · 16/04/2018 13:04

@UpstartCrow - where's that quote from? I can't quite believe anyone would say that!

FencingFightingTorture35 · 16/04/2018 13:07

That quote is appalling

ErrolTheDragon · 16/04/2018 13:08

Regardless of who he was writing about, isn't that description just like those examples of bad male writing which were parodied recently?

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 13:11

Did Mock boob boobily down the stairs too? It's ridiculous.

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/04/2018 13:17

How could anyone interview Mock and not raise those comments about supporting paid child abuse as "liberatory"? It's a huge omission. This is just a puff piece about how great Mock is. Totally poor journalism.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/04/2018 13:24

Where is that quote from? Couldn’t find it in the aerial.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/04/2018 13:24

newtlover · 16/04/2018 13:26

citation please

MissPiggysKarateChop · 16/04/2018 13:27

It isn't in the article - I put it into Google and it took me to Lipstick Ally where a poster wrote it and later said it was from a blog. I'll look for the link. I can't say that Janet Mock has actually expressed that view however.

hipsterumlaut · 16/04/2018 13:29

That quote doesn't appear anywhere online (not even though this web page which is worrying). Is it definitely genuine?

Janie143 · 16/04/2018 13:30

janetmock.com/2014/01/30/janet-mock-sex-work-experiences/ The original article

MissPiggysKarateChop · 16/04/2018 13:31

I'd just found it too Janie - without reading Janet's actual words rather than an interpretation I don't know if that is actually what she said.

Janie143 · 16/04/2018 13:33

She didn't in the way portrayed by Gendertrender

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 16/04/2018 13:33

Oh Guardian. It's like watching a once-respected colleague get pissed and grope the intern at the Christmas party.

MissPiggysKarateChop · 16/04/2018 13:35

This is her actual essay - I don't have time to read it right now. At first glance it seems to be about de-stigmatising sex work for those who had to do it, but that is first glance.

I skim read it, but I agree with you, that's what I thought too.

SuitedandBooted · 16/04/2018 13:36

@upstartcrow - do you have the original source for those comments re child exploitation?
I see Mr Hattenstone has a Twitter account.....

Two articles have been linked Suited One by JM

HerFemaleness · 16/04/2018 13:41

That is a terrible article in Gendertrender. It completely distorts what Janet Mock was saying.
