Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Mumsnet advertisers

I noticed Justine Roberts was in the paper talking about Mumsnet advertisers. It reminded me that one thing I’ve found odd is the ads I’ve noticed being placed on the MN Feminism Chat board.

Whenever I come on here I’ve often seen ads for ‘Misguided’ and ‘Pretty Little Thing’ - but the image of women and girls seems totally at odds with feminist values?

I’ve added some screenshots below (as I can only attach 3 images per post)

I wondered if anyone else had thought the same? If so, shouldn’t we be asking Mumsnet to review their advertisers policy, as surely we don’t want to be supporting such sexist stereotypes?

I also, having switched off ad blocker for Mumsnet earlier today, am getting ads for holiday companies. Unsurprising, as I was checking out pricing this week for the youngest and his mates.

Perhaps you've forgotten some of your recent browsing, Red? Bought something for someone? Researched something? Otherwise, I agree - a real mystery!

EE and iPads now.

I've got the Pretty Little things advert to the right of this thread. Probably because I'm reading a thread with the words Pretty Little Thing in them.

I think this is sort of how it works Grin

I've got discovertheforest.org, presumably because I was googling something about a woodland earlier today.

Every website you visit will put a cookie on your browser's storage. Several, in fact. If you have a look at them, some you'll recognise (they name the website) and some you won't (placed by an advert that was on that website). I've included a screenshot of some of the cookies on my browser, they all look to me to be placed by advertising companies. If I go to another website where the advertising is managed by one of those who've already placed a cookie on my drive, they can access it again and pick up where they left off with me. This is how particular adverts can appear to stalk you round the t'interweb.

oops - forgot to add the screenshot

Nope, me either.

I've got an advert for Cat's Protection League and holidays.

It is definitely linked to your browser cookies.

Oooh chaps are back in fashion. Grin

I'm getting British heart foundation telling me to check my cholesterol, Legal and general life insurance, and 3 for 2 on knickers at M+S.

I get missguided and pretty little thing a lot but I assume it's because I have a Boo Hoo account (shhhh don't tell anyone) which sells similar stuff.
The only other thing I see a lot of is Amazon, my OTHER second home on the internet. Grin

ElenOfTheWays · 15/04/2018 17:21

Currently seeing Bohea Teas which looks rather nice and posh. Smile

TeamOrders · 15/04/2018 17:33

I've never seen those ads. I get ads for clothing which is similar to what I browse for, and travel. So yes OP, more about your interests than ours I think.

daysofpearlyspencer · 15/04/2018 19:30

I have no ad blocker and as a result of today I am clicking the ads, will also be supporting those that support mumsnet

MallorieArcher · 15/04/2018 19:43

Having spent a happy hour earlier choosing a new bell tent I have an advert for glamping sites and bell tent accessories.
I do also have pretty little thing at the top but I also buy my dds clothes online so makes sense.

Ads reflect what you search, as everyone else has said.

TerfsUp · 15/04/2018 20:08

Sorry, OP. I'm not taking the bait. Free speech is more important than whining about advertisers.

serfandterf101 · 15/04/2018 20:28

I dont get any ads at all! I use the MN mobile Talk app on my phone - I assume thats why?

LassWiADelicateAir · 15/04/2018 20:30

I occasionally see the Missguided ad but didn't click on it. Have done so now and the clothes are not my style.

However this comment strikes me as being as puritanically censorious as the recent thread about the underwear web-site
Just that it seemed at odds with my feminist values of not promoting women as objects in a stereotypically sexualised way

Both , to my mind, seem to object to women being shown in any sort of clothing which shows a level of skin which the (self- appointed) complainer deems unacceptable.

Although it is quite funny if it is based on the OP's browsing history.

I am currently getting ads for one very specific , niche organisation which I have a professional reason for being involved with. Now that really intrigues me as I have not googled it on the phone I use for MN. I assume it is appearing because of geographical location rather than browsing history.
