When did the trans people take over this hash tag? I'm really ticked off.

That it wrecks women's rights is a huge win for right wing establishment. The biggest win would be the concept.

The setting of the foundation for government to tell us what we see, instead of us deciding for ourselves.

Seriously, if the general population can be conned into believing, (or at least believing we should say we believe) an adult human male is an adult human female, they're set to go.

Why? then they achieved their aim. i find it absolutely hilarious, because the kind of nonsense they post under it, is just more evidence of their nonsense. I saw one about lady dick. You really think that does them favors? The only people who will enjoy this are TRAs themselves, it will be a circle jerk for them. Any outsider looking in, will think it ridiculous.

numberseven · 13/04/2018 06:13

So the people organizing this think that publicly threatening to murder noncompliant women makes trans activism look like less of a problem and the people who're pushing back against its overreaches look bad?

Don't forget all the "I'm so much sexxxxxier than all you ugly feminists look here's a selfie". That'll make everyone see things their way. Wink

Umm...some folks are keeping a watchful eye.

Shouldn't that last one be tagged #peakfurry instead?

Their campaigns are so laughable. Ridiculous. Today just highlighted that. It's a bit disconcerting in the first moment they take over a hashtag, but once you suss it, it's just funny. Imitation, the best form of flattery.

I particularly loved the shewolf thing. So wildly inappropriate, and a gift to the victims supporters. Whoever thought describing Tara as a shewolf would help their cause?

I've been a bit surprised by their campaigns, to be honest. They are beyond ridiculous, almost parodies of rational discussion. Loads of 'are you alright hun?' and 'you look beautiful babe'.

And of course, heavily spiced with some good old sexist abuse and misogynistic violence thrown in.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/04/2018 22:26

I think it's the influence of Tumblr, where that kind of approach has worked well for the people using it. Transposed to a mostly adult environment like Twitter it's all a bit silly looking.

UpstartCrow · 13/04/2018 22:30

I don't understand the she wolf reference, is that supposed to be a reference to Romulus and Remus and the founding of Rome?
If that's the case they may want to look into the Roman meaning of 'she-wolf- a bit more.

Peaceloving · 13/04/2018 22:44

Maria Maclachlan's attacker support campaign is called Freethe Shewolf. Wolf is the surname.

People say that's also the name of a nazi concentration camp, haven't check.

There is a go fund me page for SheWolf that has raised over £2k, so the Wolf would have some spare change for further interactions.

given that my earlier comment has been screenshot and is doing the rounds... I thought it appropriate to elaborate:

I do believe that the way that twitter works is being used as a weapon by some individuals:

-through their use and abuse of blocks
-through their deliberate construction of false narratives that cause fear & loathing
-trolling /goading in order to screenshot / misrepresent
-targeting of individuals / groups
-construction of false narratives
-to exert pressure on political figures
-to exert pressure on businesses (eg Mumsnet/ Mercure Cardiff this week)
-bullying and harassment
-stifling / silencing of women's voices
-deliberate and widespread manipulation

article
Trans activists think debate is hate speech
janice turner

Feminists want a reasoned discussion on the law but face opponents who use social media and boycotts to silence them

A Woman’s Place has six demands, including “respectful and evidence-based discussion” and for impact assessments on how proposed changes to the GRA, allowing natal men to self-ID as women, will affect data-gathering on crime, health and the gender pay gap. Pretty extreme stuff. This (Cardiff Mercure) was the latest event to be cancelled after trans activists bombarded venues with intimidation and abuse. Glasgow, Lewisham, the Conway Hall . . . even Millwall FC, famed for their slogan “fear no foe”, withdrew a recent room booking after their switchboard was jammed and protests threatened. A Woman’s Place must ticket an event without revealing its location until a few hours before the start. Even then, as in Cardiff, it must secure a back-up venue. (A primary school whose governor activists are now hounding).

How does this happen? This is a complex debate but on the phone to meek receptionists and scared middle managers, trans activists keep it simple. They say: “These evil women are social conservatives who hate trans people. They’re like Tory bigots who brought in Section 28 and hated gays. They want to eradicate trans women; they incite violence against them. They deny their humanity and want them dead. Do you want your company to be part of that?”

It is ludicrous, of course. The feminists, including many lesbians, have fought for LGBT rights: without exception they believe trans people should live free from violence, indignity or discrimination. (A Woman’s Place has trans members and speakers.) Moreover gay people sought only the right to love who they wished and for that love to receive equal recognition: gay rights had no impact upon the rights of anyone else.

Gender self-ID has serious implications for women’s rights, yet the Tory minister Maria Miller led an inquiry that proposed it should become law without hearing from a single women’s organisation. Hundreds of women have contacted me expressing concerns they daren’t raise in public. They were incensed that self-ID would allow a rapist with intact male genitalia into a women’s prison; infuriated that male-bodied athletes, like the New Zealand weightlifter, Laurel Hubbard, can enter women’s sporting competitions; fearful that predatory men (NB not genuine trans women) will exploit self-ID to prey upon them in changing rooms or dormitories; outraged by an ideology that insists a penis can be a female organ. Above all they are sick of being told, mainly by left-wing men who love lecturing feminists from presumed moral high ground, to shut up and make way for “progress”.

Yet the simplified trans version cuts through because it plays to a company’s worst fears: being hounded on social media. Mumsnet is a rare forum where feminist anxiety about trans ideology is allowed to be aired. The website takes no position, it merely upholds free speech. However, activists are now threatening Mumsnet advertisers, telling them to stop “funding bigotry” or face a Twitter storm and possible boycott. They hope that, fearful of losing revenue, Mumsnet will delete and ban the debates.

AngryAttackKittens · 14/04/2018 08:40

Given that the hotel backed off and stated that they didn't endorse their original SM response I suspect that another factor is, who usually runs any company's social media accounts? One of the youngest people on staff, sometimes an intern. In which generation do the gender identity true believers tend to be found?

Maybe as the social media controversy starts making its way up the chain to the grown ups we'll see more responses like that.

R0wantrees · 14/04/2018 08:58

there's so little investigation though... articles about the cancellation and the hotel's twitter response used a very reasonable sounding tweet from someone in the transgender community. A 2 minute scroll through the account's twitter page would show that the holder's views clearly...

MrGHardy · 14/04/2018 23:10

"People say that's also the name of a nazi concentration camp, haven't check."

There was a female guard dubbed the "hyena of auschwitz". Possibly referring to that, but I am fairly positive there is no concentration camp with that name. It does bring back memories of Return to Castle Wolfenstein :)

LangCleg · 14/04/2018 23:42

I think it's supposed to refer to Ilsa, She Wolf Of The SS, a film from a very unpleasant genre of Nazi-inspired porn. Or at least, that's what others have said.

picklemepopcorn · 15/04/2018 06:57

In the interests of balance, there is also a shewolf song which refers to your inner sexy goddess, trapped inside you.

AnotherQuoll · 15/04/2018 20:34

It ("she-wolf") just sounds odd to me because it's so dated and corny. So maybe, considering he likes it enough to gasp "DEADNAME" himself, is the porn thing?

(Or is it super-cool now, and should I be referring to my ginger & white mog as "The He-Cat"?)

TerfsUp · 15/04/2018 22:08

It doesn't piss me off when TRAs co-opt #peaktrans. It makes me laugh because it shows how petty and desperate they are.

AngryAttackKittens · 15/04/2018 22:56

There were werewolves in Twilight so maybe Tara identifies as one of those?

RuthieMac · 16/04/2018 08:15

I’m trying to get people to join me in co-opting the TRA #peakterf hashtag today lol - but I can see it backfiring on me big time if no-one else joins in. I’m gonna get a whole lot of TRA “TERF” hate tweets. 😬

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 08:19

Start with "my penis is female because I tied a pretty pink bow around it?"

kn23 · 16/04/2018 10:45

Horrible stuff on both sides in the debates on twitter. But it's just wrong to deny that trans women have been the subject of death threats , doxxing and violence from some self-described TERFs , however small a minority. Trans friends of mine put up with it daily.

AncientLights · 16/04/2018 10:52

TERF is generally considered to be a term of abuse, or slur at the very least. I would be suspicious of any 'self-declared TERF': I'd suspect a TRA/MRA in masquerade attempting to crank things up a notch or two.
