Women's underwear modelling

This makes me so cross. I want to buy underwear, fine - I understand that it's useful to see it being worn.

But WHY do I need a provocative name for the campaign ('Nudes for you'), and three women all draped over each other in a group come hither manner? Why do advertisers do this? I never see half nude men cosied up together. And surely they want to sell to women, so why is the ad so clearly for the male gaze?

Australian campaign by the way.

You mean to say you don't writhe around on your bed in your knickers as you get ready in the morning??

Totally agree. It's unnecessary and just feeds into the constant barrage of imagery that reduces girls and women to playthings.

If this was a sneaky way of getting to look at men’s underwear models, you are a genius;

This stuff is usually plastered all over men’s magazines like GQ and Esquire. Or is your problem one of how women are represented, regardless of whether there is a male equivalent or not?

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/04/2018 13:38

"Nude" in this context means underwear which is close to your skin tone and won't show through white , pastel or lightweight fabrics. It has nothing to do with being provocative.

There are frequently complaints that "nude" as a colour in a fashion context means nude for a white person Kate Middleton is a big fan of "nude" shoes. The campaign you are complaining about is addressing that.

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/04/2018 13:41

None of the models are doing that.

The photographs of the 3 of them together are presumably to show how the "nude" underwear looks on different skin tones.

CaptainWarbeck · 12/04/2018 13:55

Lass I know nude means that in this context. But the ad plays up the other meaning too.

Jurgen is that really how men's underwear is marketed to them? I've never seen those kind of ads on big billboards before but prepared to be proved wrong.

Captain, I’d tell you to google ‘men’s underwear ads’, but I don’t want to lead you astray ;-)

Lots of sportsmen are used as well . David Beckham, the Italian men’s football squad. David Gandy too. Hardly a ‘normal ‘ physique among them.

Did you scroll down the page?

noeffingidea · 12/04/2018 16:12

I don't see anything particularly provocative about these photos. I think they're fitting for the style of underwear which is slightly glamourous rather than purely functional. It strikes me as the kind of underwear women might choose for themselves.

Nuffaluff · 12/04/2018 16:28

I like the look of it. It looks comfy and practical. And I love a bit of lace. Great idea too, as most so called ‘nude’ underwear available is only for one skin tone.
I don’t think the images are sexualised either. They’re just smiling and moving about a bit.
I don’t know how they could show their customers what the underwear was like without showing models wearing underwear.
