I just saw something on Twitter that said Barclays were sponsoring Mermaids - does anyone know whether this is true?

Very interesting.

The relationship goes back a couple of years at least

MermaidsTakeover · 06/04/2018 10:51

I've name changed because I work at Lloyds. This partnership with Mermaids goes way back and there's been a load of things over the years that have been questionable. It looks like Barclays are jumping on the same train.

The change of health insurance to cover SRS is likely what got Lloyds to the top of the Stonewall list. It doesn't bother me as this is for consenting adults, although there are possible concerns about using it to fast track or get around safe guarding. I understand there's been a lot of customers complaining about the misuse of funds but it's probably small change to the costs of providing health care.

Lloyds have been hosting Mermaids events for years - the impression I get is that top people in D&I view Susie and Jackie as personal friends. I know that a number of high profile transwomen in Lloyds are patrons of Mermaids and have been instrumental in shaping the narrative and assuring funding.

A number of articles have been released parroting Susie's line which condemns NHS restrictions to hormones and surgery minors as barbaric, no critical thought appears to have gone into this. I submitted an anonymous complaint about this and the need for evidence based medicine but doubt it has done anything.

Is this for real? Just seen it on Twitter but I am struggling to believe Barclays communication/PR department would be this foolish.

Yet again I am lost for words

BudgieInABeret · 07/04/2018 09:59

Does anyone know if any bank is not involved with Mermaids ?

feesh · 07/04/2018 10:19

The thing which pisses me off the most to read this is that I used to work for a well known conservation charity, and the constant fight to get any funding at all was so depressing. Yet we were fighting real and urgent issues which affect everyone in the UK. How fucking depressing.

Who released the articles? Lloyds?!?

Whilst I’ve signed the petition and am very critical of the gender of bill please remember that the people who access mermaids really do need that support which they don’t really get anywhere else. I’ve met with some families last year who use mermaids and they get so much from it. I’m not saying that I 100% agree with the medicalisation of children and everything mermaids do - but there didn’t seem to be any negative to things the family’s and children had been involved in with mermaids. It was mostly about meeting up with people in the same situation and feeling like they belonged somewhere. No mention or pushing of puberty blockers or surgery...

Winewinewinegin · 07/04/2018 11:10

Young children with gender dysphoria absolutely deserve sympathetic support from people with their best interests at heart. There are lots of people with serious questions about Mermaids approach to this though.

Still curious about where and by who the articles mentioned by @MermaidsTakeover were published, would be interested to read them.

MermaidsTakeover · 07/04/2018 11:32

I think I've been misleading - we have internally published articles as part of the LBG interchange which is the homepage for our intranet. They are not externally published but do reach a large audience. The articles have been exactly the Susie Green line of "The NHS are mean to trans children so parents need the support of Mermaids to get around them"

Whilst I've no doubt that Mermaids is a vital support group for parents, I think it's highly irresponsible for a group to be painting the Tavistock as anti-trans children for supporting watchful waiting and evidence based medicine

BudgieInABeret · 07/04/2018 11:36

I object to the better a trans child than a dead child
The use of made up statistics, to frighten parents.
This goes against Samaritans Guidelines.

How the fuck is that supporting parents ?

athingthateveryoneneeds · 07/04/2018 11:49

Why aren't there any alternatives to Mermaids for parents, though?
