I think they mean it like a tabby cat is a cat. Although no one's ever disputed that.

@Igneococcus

(my cheap 3-month sub runs out soon though; I have to decide whether to cancel or pay full price...)

Good on Christina Patterson. "The women on Mumsnet had a point" - damn right we do Grin

That idiot next to her trying to butt in - she wasn't having any of it. Bloody well said.

I'm guessing (and hoping) that the investigation is happening because TRAs have raised a complaint, and once that's done it has to be investigated. I've never heard a single person in Parliament say that Parliament shouldn't be a place of free speech and debate on the law - which was precisely what this meeting was.

TRAs on twitter were calling it a "nazi style hate rally" - which is so much nonsense - and this will be proved from recordings of the meeting.

I suddenly find, well into my 40's, that Free Speech is suddenly becoming a huge issue to me. The way our discussions - our very language - is being policed by people who have set themselves up as supreme arbiters of what women can or cannot say. It's having a serious impact on women discussing their rights, sex segregated spaces, even their own biology.

Made doubly worse by the fact that the self-proclaimed Supreme Arbiters are generally woke youths.

(Caveat: I know that not all self-proclaimed Supreme Arbiters are youths, and that not all youths are self-proclaimed Supreme Arbiters!) WinkGrin

Good on Christina.
More of this!

Having David TC Davies investigated for freedom of speech is not such a bad thing. It is sending the Government and the Conservative party a message in big, flashing neon letters.

Yes. Especially when Davies, an MP who has voted against some LGB rights and women's rights, is the one facilitating a meeting at which many speakers and attendees would be lesbians and all would be women, so that they could talk about those rights.

A great many people gabbing on and on and Ariston about imaginary transphobia need to sit themselves down and think those implications through.

MacaroonMama · 02/04/2018 08:58

Just a quick thought - is it because we paid for tickets? I am sure Venice changed the wording so the bought tickets are now valid for a future event, but I know some TRAs kicked up a fuss because events cannot be ticketed with money changing hands?

Popchyk · 02/04/2018 09:01

I agree that this is a good thing. More light shone upon this issue.

David D can handle himself and won't be forced into issuing a meek apology.

If he is sanctioned, he will kick up a massive fuss about it. And, given his profile, he will be listened to in the mainstream media. I can't help but feel that the Tories are looking for a reason to ditch self-ID completely. Sticking up for free speech gives them a means to do just that.

misscockerspaniel · 02/04/2018 09:06

The investigation is not yet showing up on the Commissioner of Parliamentary Standard's page of the HoC website. But I don't think it will be too long before we know the details.

Datun · 02/04/2018 09:20

His office was targeted relentlessly as well. He knows full well the pressure that is being brought to bear.

I'm sure he won't cave either.

The issue of free speech is becoming more mainstream. With people supporting it.

I hate to think that the Tories have decided on some kind of Machiavellian plot that exposes the objections to free speech. Because it feels so manipulative.

But maybe that's exactly what they are doing.

I've went for the £8 a month option LapdanceShoeshine, I can't access it on my tablet except at weekends but can on my phone browser so it does the job.

GenderApostate · 02/04/2018 12:18

I wonder if M.Cashman was instrumental in the complaint?

LapdanceShoeshine · 02/04/2018 12:19

@FlaviaAlbia

I didn’t see that - only £6 a week, which is far too much Confused

I’ll have another look!

FlaviaAlbia · 02/04/2018 12:24

Same @LapdanceShoeshine I forgot to cancel the free trial then nearly dropped when the full subscription came out of my bank account! I rang to cancel and they let me use that full amount towards my new subscription instead, it's a digital pack without tablet access.

Cashman was being a bit of dick about it on Twitter, but then back-pedalled a bit, when he realised that it was all properly sponsored by an MP, I think. I don't like him very much though. I still remember him from Eastenders, and for him, as a Labour Peer, and an LGBT spokesperson to dismiss lesbian women's concerns like that - and just block them on twitter, well - not good. I think he needs to remember the "L" in LGBT.

twitter.com/Giuliana_London This person has been very vocal, and said they raised an official complaint.

LapdanceShoeshine · 02/04/2018 13:00

@FlaviaAlbia

Thank you Smile

I’ve got a post-it reminder to cancel mine. I wonder if they might send me your offer if I do cancel it...

Ereshkigal · 02/04/2018 13:21

I've just changed mine to that offer.

According the HoC website, DD is being investigated for an alleged breach of para 15 of the Code of Conduct, which reads: "Members are personally responsible and accountable for ensuring that their use of any expenses, allowances, facilities and services provided from the public purse is in accordance with the rules laid down on these matters. Members shall ensure that their use of public resources is always in support of their parliamentary duties. It should not confer any undue personal or financial benefit on themselves or anyone else, or confer undue advantage on a political organisation".

From what I can gather, it's about tickets being sold and therefore money being made. But Venice said the money went directly to pay for the event.
