I'd like to open by saying I don't know the answer to this question but it's just based off a gut feelingand I thought it was interesting to explore.
My old housemate (gay male) adored Ru Paul's drag race...I used to watch bits and pieces of it with him but it sometimes left me with a slightly off feeling.
I've seen drag performances in real life in Soho and enjoyed it very much; they were more like sing alongs where the audience got a bit of a drubbing like a comedy compere would do.
But Ru Paul's contestants seem so.... aggressively over the top, almost? It's like they're having a competition to see who can portrey the most ridiculous display of "femininity", and it's all bad stereotypes eg. Bitchyiness
I suppose drag may not really be represented by Ru Paul in the same way Tyra Banks doesn't really speak for the modelling industry, it's just good TV, but nevertheless it's worth thinking about.
I obviously don't know much about drag so very prepared to be educated! What do you think: is drag potentially anti-feminist?
