Naomi Hersi, transwoman murdered in London

I haven’t seen a thread about this yet.

I just came across this mentioned in a Times article about the recent upsurge in murders all over London the last few weeks - the rest all being men, shot or stabbed usually in public. Naomi was stabbed in a hotel room, a man has already been charged with her murder, and a 17yo girl for assisting. It seems a little different from the rest of the deaths referred to.

A little more googling and it seems Naomi’s death hasn’t really been picked up much in the media at all. A report in the standard was quite depersonalised, avoiding any gendered pronouns and referring only to ‘the victim’ etc. Stonewall have published an article decrying lack of media coverage.

I know that murders of women by male partners often go without mainstream media attention, and when they do they are often poorly written, dehumanising and victim blaming. It’s not a surprise that the murder of a transwoman would be any different, sadly. The problem a ever is male violence. I just thought it was worth posting. I don’t know how the media chooses what to cover, but it seems odd in this current climate of both awareness of male violence and transgender issues in the news, that Naomi’s death has been seemingly largely ignored.

Thoughts with friends & family of Naomi.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murdered_sex_workers_in_the_UK

Prostitution is a profession where women are at very high risk of rape, assault and murder.

It would be interesting to see the murder rates of British prostitutes who are women and the rates of transwomen who are prostitutes.

Any murder is a tragedy. For any victim to be 'paraded' by interest groups as proof of their particular view of the world is distasteful.

Ok, I feel a little piled on! Yes, I follow Karen Ingala Smith, yes, I am fully aware of the extent of violence against women and girls. I had not seen any specific coverage of Naomi Hersi’s murder, and where I came across it in the Times, it was in a list of recent murders in London (there has been a spike in stabbings & shootings in the past 2 weeks). I also searched on MN and didn’t find any threads. So apologies if you all think I’m perpetuating a false narrative. I’m a little tired and unwell right now so sorry if I can’t answer better than that.

It's also notable that the victim was initially reported as Mr Hersi Hersi.
It's unclear whether he considered himself trans or whether he cross dressed part time as 'Naomi', but it seems he retained his male name and identity at least to some extent.

I sincerely hope there aren't cynical attempts to posthumously trans him to exploit an agenda. This is a horrible enough crime of murder without vultures using his death to make a point.

Naomi appears to have identified as trans for at least seven years, twitter.com/naomi_hersi/status/24971420052230144 my guess is the initial ID as 'Mr.' was just (understandably) following legal ID.

The irony is that TRAs almost always support 'sex work' and claim feminists who're against it are old-fashioned conservatives. They can't see how damaging it is.

Tragic - thoughts with Naomi and her family Flowers

Agree that what happened to Niaomi Hersi was horrible, although I have seen plenty of coverage. Don't think that makes it any better though.

Flowers for Niaomi's friends and family
