We've got a large mixed changing village, individual cubicles. I've got to say I've neither heard of our experienced any problems with it. And I've gone weekly since it opened about 10 years ago.

The previous pool I went to had just male and female areas. I think there were also a couple of family cubicles. A delightful father insisted on going into the women's (which was full of naked women ) as he had his daughter with him. Nice.

wildduckhunt · 25/03/2018 22:32

Why couldn't he take his daughter into the mens? (she asks, knowing the answer)

A massive thank you to all those who participated in #ManFriday - this must have attributed to SE’s turn around. Thanks

All our local council pools are mixed villages. I had one incident a couple years ago with a man that made my gut instinct kick in. It was close to chucking out time so hardly anyone about, I’d got out of the pool closely followed by a man, didn’t think anything of it. Went to shower (big shared open showers that you keep your costume on for) and said man took the shower right next to mine (there was 10 other showers empty). When I finished I found a cubicle and started getting ready (there must be about 100 cubicles it’s a big pool) and yes you guessed it the same man decided to choose the one right next to mine despite there being like 90 other empty ones to choose (it wasn’t a one next to the showers either so can’t say it was because it was convenience, it was around the corner). I then noticed a lot of his stuff started to ‘accidentally’ get pushed abit under my cubicle, it didn’t stop, just more stuff and it kept getting pushed further to my side - that’s when I started to worry he was getting me used to seeing stuff from his side or his camera phone was hidden amongst it all or even it was a distraction to keep me looking down while he filmed over the top of the cubicle (there’s bars across the top but nothing to stop anyone poking a phone over the side). I grabbed my stuff and moved cubicles and got ready and out of there as fast as I could as I wanted to get to my car before he got out. Looking back I wished I’d said something to the life guards as they’re usually spot on.

Patsypedalo · 25/03/2018 23:13

Changing villages are the hideous invention that allows perverts to film under and over the top of cubicle doors where children are changing after swimming. I know more than a few people that this has happened to.

It's a massive problem at our local pool and has lead to our family no longer going to the council run pools.

I would like to be involved in this consultation.

I think Swim England need to to encouraged to widen their consultation. There will be a lot of women who have used what they believed to be single sex swimming sessions for specific reasons eg health, trauma, religious beliefs, cultural reasons, age , personal preference etc etc.
My concerns are that these voices are heard and canvassed. They must be encouraged to open up the consultation in order that the twittersphere army do not carry disproportionate weight...

grasspigeons · 28/03/2018 15:33

they haven't replied to my email, not even to acknowledge it

has anyone else had a response

Igneococcus

Thanks for the article. From the first few comments, you can tell that people simply do not buy it. They know that it's wrong.

""swimmers who felt uncomfortable about sharing with transgender men or women should be helped to be more open-minded."

Now that IS sinister."

Igneococcus · 01/04/2018 11:41

The comments are very encouraging Datun I wish politicians and their staff would read comments more.

misscockerspaniel · 01/04/2018 13:29

Fiona, if you are on MN, well done for linking the petition Easter Smile

The comments are good and hopefully a sign that the general public is waking up. Well done Amy and Hannah.

That's great!
Well done #manfriday

DontCisgenderMe · 01/04/2018 18:42

I’ve also emailed.

My local pool still has sex segregated facilities, mainly open plan with just a few cubicles. The showers in the women’s changing rooms are also open plan - no individual cubicles, no doors, curtains or any sort of partition.

I’ve also had an unpleasant experience in a changing village with open showers. One man can make an awful lot of women feel very uncomfortable and vulnerable in a very short time. I simply do not want strange men around when I’m getting undressed.

Ekphrasis · 01/04/2018 20:02

I know of a few incidents of attempted voyeurism and one of actual voyeurism of a woman (that went to court) in a local pool. The attempted ones involved School Sen children; luckily enough staff to be aware and stand to create barriers and pool staff also monitored.

Separate rooms are available for sex segregation of pupils, but not anywhere near enough which meant girls (as there are always fewer) had to go in public cubicles over seen by staff and the nature of some pupils means they need to be on their own (usually with one adult overseeing them, or even two). This is difficult and stressful for staff at times. Staff also swim with the children and need to get changed.

The only pools around here where it's worked well are the sex segregated ones.

The voyeur was not convicted due to lack of evidence but recently has been due to other related offences he went on to commit.

Staff on swimming trips constantly watch for suspicious men. in the past, the main one I'm thinking of was spotted timing their swims with a class, including entering the shared shower area and then changing village at the same time.

InfiniteSheldon · 01/04/2018 20:15

Do what we say buy into our lies or we will re educate you; truly sinister

newtlover · 01/04/2018 20:17

good, progress at last

TPog · 03/04/2018 21:25

Thank you Waddlelikeapenguin and rowdywoman. I have emailed Swim England.
