Unintended Consequences of Self-ID Proposals

Winewinewinegin · 24/03/2018 18:23

It is becoming increasingly clear to many on here that the implications of Self-ID are far, far wider to groups outside the trans community than seem to have been picked up by MPs and trans-focused groups.

I thought it would be useful to capture some of these (feel free to link to other threads that list them) here. These could be things you have noticed already happening, or things that you are concerned about happening if the change in law goes ahead.

Errol thanks for that link and flagging up Dan Dennett. I'm making a note to do some more reading around that (when my blood pressure can stand it.)

Going back to @Ellenripley's post upthread - Flowers for you. Hope you're doing OK and things are looking positive.

I agree that a huge amount of money will be spent in schools and the NHS on complying with this Emperors New Clothes ridiculousness.

Schools live in constant fear of being sued. In my local secondary I know for a fact that they are wasting time and resources on a working party to consider a move to gender neutral toilets. I hated school toilets as they were. If they were gender neutral I would if I were a teen be developing an iron bladder, mainlining Imodium and wearing six sanitary towels at a time to avoid a toilet with boys in it.

Kyanite · 25/03/2018 12:05

Unisex toilets are not the answer, in some countries girl's attendance is dropping each month as they are not going to school when they have a period. I don't think even the trans boys will be happy as they specifically want to use girl's facilities.

It's bad enough as it is with children not being able to leave lessons to go to the toilet and having no time between lessons to go, my daughter's friend developed urinary problems from holding on for too long.

Accurate record keeping.... are there implications for pensions etc?

Nosetothesun · 25/03/2018 12:28

Impact on data
For example in current work on the 'Gender Pay Gap'.
I listened to this program on R4's Money Box Live this week... it is worth listening to and considering the many unintended consequences self-id could have here...

Does anyone have these increased rapes stats in Canada?

Nosetothesun · 25/03/2018 12:55

Increasing censorship of respected women.
Consider Jenni Murray & Chimamanda Adichie's recent experiences

TheGoldenBough · 25/03/2018 12:59

Schools analyse data across a number of factors - class, year group, SEND, PP, HA/MA/LA, EAL, sex.

What will happen to that? Will they continue to analyse across sex or will they analyse across gender identity?

It helps to identify trends. So if boys are making less progress than girls in a subject area, teachers can look at why that might be and address it.

Some primary schools teach boys and girls seperately for maths because evidence suggests girls make better progress in maths in single sex classes.

If they analyse/group across sex, they will be admitting that these children are still their birth sex. If they analyse/group across gender identity it will be meaningless/ineffective.

possible implications for transgender people are raised here:

Interestingly, I just completed "Prevent" training, and I was struck by the similarities between radicalisation (National front/Isis etc) and the transcult.

Targetted victims who already feel different and marginalised, the rhetoric and new terminology used as slurs, the dehumanisation of victims, the normalisation of violence, shutting down debate, praise and encouragement for following the rules of the ideology, ....

bunbunny · 25/03/2018 13:21

The whole #nodebate thing and watching how quickly it has become acceptable to basically silence half the population by saying they can't even discuss things that affect them.

Nosetothesun · 25/03/2018 13:28

This is a really important aspect....
the impact of TRA strategies have (especially recently online) on people who are questioning their their gender identity and vulnerable.
I believe there are serious questions to be asked about how some of the dominant TRA accounts, 'terfblocker' etc have manipulated reality.
It would be very easy to be convinced that there is virulent hatred of people who are transgender where there is none.

Nosetothesun · 25/03/2018 13:38

There is an interesting website considering the wider impact that some transactivists' have:
liesoftransactivists.com

Nosetothesun · 25/03/2018 13:40

sorry... pressed too soon!
The website I have linked to above states:
This site is dedicated to exposing the lies and distortions propagated by some transactivists to cause division and hatred. Some are outright untruths, some are deliberate attempts to mislead, and some are just plain stupidity. Trans people, like everyone else, deserve to be listened to and respected. The discussions around trans issues are complex and nuanced, covering biology, psychology, law, medicine, ethics, even philosophy. How can we possibly find the answers to all of those questions when people are demonised for even asking them? When we reject their lies, we might all get the peace, freedom and respect we deserve.

OlennasWimple · 25/03/2018 14:44

TheVast - yes, absolutely. TRAs are radicalisers, no doubt. And all the safeguarding training we have to protect children against religious extemists, groomers and other predators are that responsible adults must be informed; education and support must be provided to children in a holistic way; and online spaces need to be places for debate, not #nodebate

HomeTerf · 25/03/2018 15:18

Very interesting point TheVast Definitely worth introducing into the discussion of how this is being played out online and in the MSM. If more people are aware of the similarities maybe they'll be less willing to accept the TRA agenda without questioning.

TheGoldenBough · 25/03/2018 15:56

Interestingly, I just completed "Prevent" training, and I was struck by the similarities between radicalisation (National front/Isis etc) and the transcult.

Yes, I've nade a similar observation.

ALL of the markers are the same. It fits the exact same profile.

UpstartCrow · 25/03/2018 16:06

Can anyone do 'Prevent' training?

Nosetothesun · 25/03/2018 16:19

wasting police time? (another service with limited resources)

Kyanite · 25/03/2018 16:28

Laws would have to be changed...rape for example, which cannot be committed by a biological woman since we don't have a penis.

TheVastMajority · 25/03/2018 16:32

UpstartCrow I think so....

heres a link - takes about 40 mins.

Milvusmilvus · 25/03/2018 19:39

Not only women's sport but all awards and achievements to women will be hijacked and therefore lose credibility.
This seems to be happening in loads of countries, does anyone know the origins of this? Must be funded by something big. All I have found out seems to be UN and human rights stuff, but it seems to be getting derailed. This is no accident.

thebewilderness · 25/03/2018 21:25

I cannot help but wonder if they bother to read the information they spend tax dollars to produce.
