On, among other things, the gender pay gap. I usually enjoy his videos/interviews, even if I don't always agree with every point. But on this one I was a bit underwhelmed. He mentions as one example the trait of being "agreeable" (which he mentions in other videos, too) and then admits it only contributes 5% and there are over a dozen other factors. It seems disingenuous to bring an example of something that only makes up for 5%. Granted, he can't talk through all of them but still. Also I feel while he admits in the example of CEOs, that getting to the top is a struggle and it should be, he ignores that all signs point to the fact that it's a bigger struggle for women.

On the other hand, I didn't like some of Newman's comments, where he reacts especially towards the end by laughing, as she, in my opinion, does rephrase some of his words to put words in his mouth that he didn't actually say (e.g. the part where she insinuates that he said that girls will never make it on equal terms, "equal outcomes as you defined it").

Any thoughts?

There was a long thread about this, including about Peterson retweeting a hideously anti-Semitic account which was promoting him.

Hang on, I'll see if I can find it.

MrGHardy · 18/03/2018 22:47

Oh right, I must have missed that, yes please link it if you find it.

Got it. I think that links direct to the post about the anti-semitic Twitter account, but of course that will give you the whole thread.

Damn, 21 pages but the last post almost two months ago, guess I missed that debate. Finished the first page now though, some very interesting points. Anyway, I shall continue reading that thread, thanks for linking!

I really enjoy his videos, think he's great. Don't agree with him on everything and I DO think he's got a bit of a blind spot on feminism.
His chat with Camille Paglia is very good though.

I think he is totally, completely ordinary.

But because everyone else is mad at the moment, he comes across (wrongly) as a genius.

He really isn't. He's a bog standard middle class white man with bog standard views. By definition, he is going to be right about some things: freedom of speech, self identity, the need for students to tidy their rooms; and he speaks fluently and convincingly, as I would expect from an academic. But I suspect he's this generation's Amitai Etzioni (anyone remember him?) talks a bit of obvious and a lot of drivel too and does it in high-fallutin' language so you're not quite sure if you're projecting a meaning he doesn't intend.

Anyone who can have so much projected onto them, because they are so opaque or ambiguous or slippery, is usually not someone saying anything ground breaking or remarkable. IMO.

He's a good performer though. He's able to hold his own in an interview.

Askbasil you reminded me of this article about him saying similar. His books sound totally shite.

I don't think he's a genius, I just really enjoy his lectures (especially the ones about mythology/ Jung/ politics). And I am slightly fascinated by how well he constructs a line of reasoning.
Maybe he's had such an impact because the world has indeed gone off the rails a bit.
