Why is transgender okay but trans-racial not?

Both are adopting the life, aesthetic and mannerisms of a different group people. Why is one cultural appropriation and the other is something that is being celebrated as opposed to appropriating a gender? I would genuinely appreciate it if someone could explain the difference in trans people's minds because I am confused as hell

We all are...

Excellent point; I'd like to hear an explanation too.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/03/2018 14:21

Because it would seem that women of colour are some set of just "non men" so to identify as a black woman would defeat the object given they aren't a proper woman. Or person or something Hmm

Plus we can't mention trans race because that basically shows it for what it all is and makes them all look stupid

spillikins · 14/03/2018 14:21

It is the same. It's no better than black-face. Only we are expected to welcome the woman-face wearing blokes into our safe spaces.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/03/2018 14:22

Although Labour did hold some meeting where you could self identify as BAME
Disables
Woman etc

spillikins · 14/03/2018 14:24

And if I were a lesbian, should I try and rebuff the offer of sucking 'lady dick', I'd be a massive bigot who needs a punch.

Great post @spillikins

Because race, and its socio-economic am consequences is generational, whereas gender is traditionally determined at birth.

Oloves · 14/03/2018 14:30

But why does that determine if something is okay to appropriate?

gender stereotypes, although not static, are also generational across societies. as are the socio-economic and cultural consequences of being born a female human.

ChardonnaySocialist · 14/03/2018 14:43

Because women are fair game Sad

gender exists in this society outside of whether or not an individual is born. a female baby "assigned" the gender of girl at her birth in the uk (by her biologically reductive midwife?!) could be whisked away to the imaginary island i just made up in my head where all people are allowed to wear and play with whatever they wish and all parents play an active role in all aspects of child-rearing.

that baby may find idea of the gender as we understand it here to be redundant in her new home. her sex, however, will still impact her as she grows up into an adult human female and inform many of her life experiences - even if none of them are negative because its my imaginary island and i made it nice ok?

Personally, I think all this recent stuff around people 'identifying' as one thing or another is a result of the highly individualised time in which we live. We live in a capitalist, post-industrial society, and period of 'late modernity', that forces us to have this very inward focus on oneself in order to thrive economically, socially and so forth. This inward focus has resulted in us contemplating the nature of our own existence and experience to a degree that wouldn't have been the case in the past - or very little. In pre-industrial society, which was very community-based, 'the self' was tied to the community, so one's existence was more outwardly experienced. This inward focus on self has led us pay a lot of attention to, as well as craft, our own identities. We are forever contemplating what we are and how we feel, in a very individualistic, almost narcissistic way.

Doesn't answer your question at all, but just a thought.
