Hi @wukawear I’d like an apology for the fact I had a man standing at your stall talk AT me about my period flow and call me a ‘menstruater’. I’m a woman, not a ‘menstruater’. Made me feel so uncomfortable and was hugely offensive #WOWLDN

Hi. I was the ‘man’ at wow. My apologies if you felt I spoke AT you, that wasn’t my intention. If you or anyone else finds the term menstruator offensive we can hear that and make changes, it’s the first time we have had this feedback. I’m an ally, so is our female founder.

The rival company Thinx (the website is Shethinx but they probably dropped She to be woke) uses the not-at-all-clunky "menstruating humans". It's all very inconsistent though, they also have articles about African American women and whatnot.

littlevoiceofsanity · 13/03/2018 21:51

Has somebody put something in our water supplies that only real women are immune to? Excluding the very silly cooing handmaidens of course. Barking. the lot of them.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 13/03/2018 21:56

Please tweet this back at him, for the sake of my sanity, if nothing else. I work for this company.

Menstrual Hygiene Management plan-international.org/sexual-health/menstrual-hygiene-management

There are millions of girls around the world that cannot go to school because of menstruation.

Earlyup · 13/03/2018 22:11

Just quoted "it's not only women who have period" to my male OH and his reaction was "I don't understand. Is it a joke? I don't get it." Thank goodness.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 13/03/2018 22:19

It’s certainly an odd strategy to aim your marketing at a group of people who don’t need your product. Because to me, defining women as mensturators means the only people who will be happy and enthused to buy will be trans people - 0.5% of the population (what percentage of that are transmen?) and the type of activists who stand outside WPUK meetings.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 13/03/2018 22:26

I just read their twitter feed, they were genuine, I've twitted at them to say we are sorry but we are dealing with an onslaught of activism trying to obliterate th mention of women and girls and thanked them for understanding. Not sure if I helped.

Twitter, TBH I gave it up because its more like Twatter mostly.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 13/03/2018 22:31

They were not trans activists, they are a women and girls organisation. Please check before you react.

Replying to @wukawear
Thank you for understanding. Those of us that care about this are dealing with an onslaught from activists that want any mention of women and girls moderated out of the language. It's a strange world indeed. Apologise for linking..much love.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 13/03/2018 22:41

I think we should be kind to Ruby and possibly even Dave now. They got it straight away and apologised and they are sorting out 'menstruators'.

Let's go back to reminding Stella Creasey of the error of her ways.

maladroit · 13/03/2018 22:42

Dave, the guy responding originally, was being a total knob-end, and more "sorry if you were offended" than genuinely apologetic. He was also dismissive to the woman who complained, saying she should have no problem with a man talking to/at her about her periods, and asking if she had a problem with male gynaecologists (because a trained gynaecologist who has reason to talk to you about your vagina is the same as Dave from WUKA badgering you while you're pootling through the Southbank Centre). The woman's apology is more genuine, but still puts the blame on people who were annoyed about being called "menstruators".

Kneedeepinunicorns · 13/03/2018 23:27

I do particularly like the tweet pointing out that if women are reduced to 'menstruators' then this probably reduces men to 'wankers'....

mirialis · 13/03/2018 23:46

Someone is posting on that thread that trans women get PMT symptoms like "headaches"

AngryAttackKittens · 14/03/2018 00:20

OK, great, now explain why having a headache would mean that you'd need special knickers.

thebewilderness · 14/03/2018 00:24

Perhaps they will call us breeders, instead.

NoqontroI · 14/03/2018 00:30

Ewwww

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 14/03/2018 00:55

Or just bleeders?

SunsetBeetch · 14/03/2018 06:33

Nobody is saying they are TRAs. They are pandering to TRA ideology with this rubbish though. And their initial response to this was appalling- they've since deleted the worst tweets

OP posts:
TheGoldenBough · 14/03/2018 07:03

Original tweets are enough for me to never buy from them.

They have done some serious backtracking once it looked like their business might be affected but those tweets suggest to me that they knew exactly what they were doing.

You don't need to use gender neutral language when something only affects women's biology.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 23/03/2018 14:59

Having looked at their Twitter they seem to be happily using the word “woman” again!

MermaidUnicorn · 23/03/2018 17:33

Oh God this is a business local to me - I was waiting to hear about it on here and am really glad that there has been a backlash about 'menstuator'. Basically a friend shared a link to the company on her fb page and I responded with: 'menstuators?' The owner then responded that they use that term 'to be inclusive of non-binary and trans people'. I responded that a) we are all non-binary and b) I think the product is great but worry about females being erased from language about menstruation. I genuinely think they didn't mean anything sinister by it, but had just had some 'woke' diversity training. This has made my day actually Smile

Ekphrasis · 23/03/2018 18:28

I'm wondering if the unisex design is more as many women actually like non fussy non flowery designs? I do.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/03/2018 18:53

You can't have a 'unisex' product for periods. You could have an ungendered one.

PuertoVallarta · 23/03/2018 19:33

The unisex design and the problematic language are to appeal to TIFs, not TIMs.

TheGoldenBough · 23/03/2018 19:40

But 'unisex' means it is appropriate to both sexes.

Both sexes don't need it.

It doesn't need to accommodate cock and balls becaise those with cock n balls don't have periods.

Ergo, it is not unisex.

Ekphrasis · 23/03/2018 20:25

Ah I was thinking of the pant design being 'unisex' as an old fashioned way to say un gendered. As in the 'style.'

I mean I was imagining from their POV and write up and response to 'menstruators' that it was ill thought through language. It doesn't sound like they've been Kool Aided. But maybe I'm being too generous.

mirialis · 24/03/2018 23:15

Are we allowed by MNHQ to have a "Trans Lightehearted" thread (or maybe we already had one and I missed it)? Would start a new one but sure it would get reported for mocking the disabled... though we're not allowed to view transgenderism as a disability.... I think... bit confused... just want a lighthearted or however it's flagged up in AIBU thread for things that are funny if you don't think too deeply.

Anyway, this TIMS and periods issue... just looking at a thread Daisy posted last night - I read about three posts in and then gave up as thought it would make me cross too late to bed before an early start for work this morning (transwomen synchronising their "menstrual symptoms" with their trans widows even though the notion that women synch periods has been overwhelmingly discredited by studies)... but now am about five posts in and - sorry - but it's making me chuckle despite my own infertility issues (i.e. having to monitor for ovulation every fucking month to no avail after multiple miscarriages)

Started getting this pretty much after month 2 on pills. My wife keeps making fun of me eating Ranch Dressing with a table spoon and complaining about bloating and cramps. We both have to laugh about it quite a bit, but I can't help it. Getting better though, eating a few carrots with Ranch dressing now

I have to admit, this is something I did not expect to happen. It does however make perfect sense. I am on Progesterone 14 days each month and it pretty much starts two days after I take the last Progesterone. Matches a cis female cycle. Progesterone drops, period starts

What is even more interesting is that I am also starting to notice changes mid cycle, pretty much during the ovulation time

Have never had the ranch dressing cravings... if only I'd realised this was the problem I could have done without all the intrusive tests?! Shock

Maybe my sweary language makes me seem very angry and offended by this but it's actually making me chuckle (and I've only had one glass of wine).

Anyone else able to sidestep the anger for one thread and share something that's made them laugh?
