When is the Gender ID bill due?

Just that. I know trans issues are a massive (rage inducing) headache on MN, but it can't see when it will be made into law. There was a 1st reading in the House of Commons last year and it's all gone quiet.

DH (being a cynic) reckons the Conservatives have put it on the back burner as a potential vote loser they would rather not deal with. The party will never actually admit it as they would be shouted down as transphobic, but neither will they push it.

Can anyone else shed light?

Kicked into the long grass AFAIK. I suspect they will be watching the outcome of the Scottish consultation very closely though.

The one last year was a Private Members' Bill which ran out of time. The Government were planned to introduce government-sponsored amendments to the existing Gender Recognition Act in this parliamentary session, ie 2017-19. However, word on the street is that they are finally beginning to realise what a minefield the whole thing is.

Lots of blather about taking time to consider things - without asking for people’s views on what to consider. Seems they’re watching for the outcome in Scotland and also with refuges before they commit to doing something.

Thanks, all. DH is nodding wisely and I really hope Brexit will be a sufficient distraction to see the amendment die.

In someways if the Tories see the light, you WANT it to be addressed this parliament rather than risk it going to the next.

Kicking into the long grass may be a mixed blessing. The SNP are clearly going to do something now, so its important that England also look at it.

@RedToothBrush That is an astute observation. Either the Tories tinker with it now or an incoming Labour Government may make sweeping reforms.

I think it was another cunning plan to see which idiot party would go for it: guess who won: Labour
