Waitrose in the Sunday Times, mother's day name change announced

Waitrose is selling gender-neutral Mother’s Day cards as retailers reduce their use of the M-word to make today’s celebration more “transgender inclusive”, write Andrew Gilligan and Vincent Wood.

The supermarket chain is selling a “Happy You Day” card in its Mother’s Day range in which the word “mother” does not appear.

Waitrose said the move was aimed at “broadening out who the cards can go to, whether it’s grandmas or transgender mums”. Traditional cards are still sold.

Waitrose has been joined by other retailers, including Scribbler, whose Mother’s Day offerings include a “Two mums are better than one” card for same-sex couples and a “Dad, thanks for being the most amazing mum” card.

The changes come after calls by some trans activists to rename Mother’s Day. Suggestions include Guardian’s Day and Carer’s Day.

Karen Pollock, a trans campaigner and therapist, said Mothering Sunday, the church’s traditional name for Mother’s Day, “feels more inclusive to me, since anyone can be ‘mothering’”.

Some schools — including Consett Junior School in Co Durham and High Bank School in Liversedge, West Yorkshire — have advertised the festival on their websites as Special Person’s Day or Mother’s and Special Person’s Day.

For some the day signifies sadness, perhaps because their mother has died. Liverpool Cathedral held a service last night for such “Mother’s Day runaways”.

Oh ffs. There have always been grandma cards, stepnum cards and "you're like a mum to me" cards.
But of course we need to make sure people with penises can get in on the act.
Looking forward to see what happens on fathers day.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 11/03/2018 07:32

This is hardly new though. Mother’s Day cards for aunties, grandmothers and “like a mother to me” have been available for years.

I used to send one of the above.

I resent the changing of the name of the day though.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 11/03/2018 07:33

Perhaps we should ask questions about what Waitrose intends to do on Father’s Day.

merrymouse · 11/03/2018 07:44

I don’t think the name of the day has changed - pretty sure today is still Mothering Sunday.

I don’t have any problem with ‘Happy You Day’ on a card, and doubt that it is specifically aimed at the transgender market which is pretty small.

Far more people have people who aren’t their mothers who have taken on a mothering role. There’s also no reason why you couldn’t send it to your actual mother.

Patodp · 11/03/2018 07:47

OK. .. PR stunt alert.

They're not dramatically ending mother's day.
Anything that helps protect the company from the TRA onslaught that surrounds anything woman-y is great, and confined to a tiny sub section of a shelf in Waitrose.

SavoyCabbage · 11/03/2018 07:47

Do the 'The changes come after calls by some trans activists to rename Mother’s Day.' or is that cards that don't have the word mother on have been around for years and that Happy You Day' is a quite clever way of making sure there is a card for grandma/auntie/foster mother/dad etc .

I struggle to find a card as I don't call my mother Mum, I call her Mam so I can't buy 80% of the cards.

HairyBallTheorem · 11/03/2018 08:23

It's a joke people. Link here. The Times often has a satirical "third leader". Waitrose are not selling "Happy You Day" cards - they were chosen by the leader-writer as the most absurd choice he could think of to be an example of "political correctness gorn mad", as, clearly given their customer base, this is something Waitrose would never do.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 11/03/2018 08:37

Poes Law!

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 11/03/2018 08:38

Do I win the thread?

RancidOldHag · 11/03/2018 08:54

"of course we need to make sure people with penises can get in on the act. "

I agree, out church gives out daffodils to everyone who has acted like a mother, including single and widowed fathers. If the church - who originated this festival - takes this attitude, then yes I think that does validate it extent to anyone who cares on that way.

But the secular version can be whatever people make it. I'm pretty sure not all churches celebrate the same, so others can also choose to include or exclude as they see fit.

Just remember that including men - of any shape or type - isn't new and is endorsed by the actions of churches.

Card manufacturers are just cottoning on a big late. And the shame is that if you want a proper 'Mothering Sunday' you have to hunt quite hard. And that's the one that's not on the excerpts from the Waitrose list.

I resent the changing of the name - but I think it is now entrenched away for Mothering Sunday

meditrina · 11/03/2018 08:57

Bringing the name Mothering Sunday back to common use could be quite a good move right now.

Iminthecclubnow · 11/03/2018 08:58

I did think this sounded a bit Southend News Network!

Becauseimworthit79 · 11/03/2018 08:59

I don’t think they’ll rename Mothering Sunday. If trans women believe they are real women, then surely they want to get given a Mother’s Day card rather than a Father’s Day one. Or just be happy with a personalised blank one.

DixieFlatline · 11/03/2018 09:06

Has anyone asked each individual church which gender it identifies as? Thought not. Typical cis assumptions. Plus sexist to boot - why can’t a church be a man?!

I need sleep.

JaimesGoldenHand · 11/03/2018 09:08

I may well be falling for a really elaborate joke but, if you check out @ mragilligan's twitter, he has a screenshot of said Waitrose card. With assorted replies calling him transphobic, natch.

terfsRus · 11/03/2018 09:28

I'm confused. Don't TIMs bully everyone into saying they're women?!

TheRagingGirl · 11/03/2018 10:02

Well, I'm a barren spinster and I object.

MOTHERING SUNDAY is not about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Why can't we have a 'Non-Mothers' Day'. It is literally violent and I think it's going to trigger me to go anywhere near other people today.

FFS

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/03/2018 10:25

Gilligan has previous for cult wrangling though doesn't he with his Scientology stuff?

It's written perfectly neutrally with the transgender therapist suggestion that we use mothering and not mother, many of you have echoed this here.

So even a balanced piece about social changes is labeled transphobia..........

Nothing can be said that isn't evidence against us.

A few hours ago this TSB ad was including 'dads who are mums'.
There were a few comments.
It's changed. Smile

HairyBallTheorem

Thanks for pointing out that it is a joke. I couldn't work out why Waitrose, of all shops, would be pandering to TRAs and delicate male egos Grin

HairyBallTheorem · 11/03/2018 13:45

miss actually I stand corrected; Andrew Gilligan has tweeted an image of the card. Though I'd put money on its designer having intended it to be taken in the spirit of spa days and "make time for you" rather than as a trans-inclusionary statement

TheNaze73 · 11/03/2018 13:48

Hats off to the marketing department of Waitrose. They’re being talked about.

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 13:51

I don't understand why you'd celebrate Mother;s Day if you don't "identify" as one.

MarklahMarklah · 11/03/2018 13:52

Mothering Sunday originally had nothing to do with Mothers. I don't mind making celebration of any kind as inclusive as possible, but commercialising anything and everything is becoming more rife.
As others have said, this is fake news, though.

Looneytune253 · 11/03/2018 13:53

Surely a transgender mum is still a mum even if they are now a male? They don’t change their role in someone’s life and if they do they don’t deserve to be celebrated anyway?
