Found this rather marvellous and goose bumpy.

Shame there weren't more people in the debate though.

Mhairi Black gives me goosebumps almost every time she makes a speech. I have a dream that one day, she will be prime minister. I realise it isn’t likely as she’s SNP. But she is an astonishingly articulate young woman with a real social conscience.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 07/03/2018 17:51

OMG. That's the best thing I've seen this year

She's a tour de force.

(I so wish she could see the light re. Self ID)

Hamiltoes · 07/03/2018 18:23

Just watched this and came on here to see if it had been posted yet. What a fabulous woman and I'm disappointed there wasn't many people in the room with her to hear it.

NanooCov · 07/03/2018 18:58

I think she's great. A real breath of fresh air. I don't share her views re Scottish independence and am also not on the same page re the trans/gender/sex debate, but am glad there are politicians like her who are so passionate.

I think she is an amazing woman as well. Is she really pro self id? That would seem to fly in the face of the rest of her beliefs. Can anyone link to this?

gruffalosarse · 07/03/2018 19:40

She is a breath of fresh air to Westminster and does discuss real issues with passion and conviction. However, I work in the public sector in her constituency as she has not been very effective, the local children's hospital has been earmarked for closure and she has kept a very low profile on this matter.

Ritzsaltedcrackers · 07/03/2018 19:47

She’s pro self ID which spoils it for me I’m afraid.

PlectrumElectrum · 07/03/2018 19:56

She wrote an article for the daily record (end jan I think) which is highlighted on trans media watch's Twitter a/c if you need proof of her stance on trans debate. I tried to find her comments as I'm sure someone asked her separately of her views but can't find them.

Her speech is strong & would be even better if she would open her eyes to the same abuse being directed at women who ask questions about proposed legislation changes that impact women's rights.

PurpleGreenWhite · 07/03/2018 22:36

There is some interesting background to this debate in this research briefing and the full report can be downloaded as a pdf.

"There was also some concern that if the policy were to be adopted nationally, it might need to be framed as “gender based hate crime” rather than misogyny because of “a view that men should be treated equally under the law”. The APPG considered that this might be problematic, as it would "fail to address misogyny as a structural problem, and could lead to widespread reporting of misandry, when in reality it is very rare indeed for men to be victims of hate crime because of their gender specifically". Angry

Awful woman. One of those people who even if she is saying something I agree with make me want to take the opposite view. Anyway here she is on trans rights.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 08/03/2018 00:43

That's not very sensible now Lass! Grin

I know her views on Self ID and it annoys me no end. I delude myself that she does not yet understand the issues and all she needs is to come to MN FWR and have Datun give her a good talking to and all will be well

But I like her.

OlennasWimple · 08/03/2018 00:52

LM could do well to sit and look at how someone more or less the same age can construct and present an argument

OlennasWimple · 08/03/2018 00:53

I wonder how the Hansard reporters reacted when they read MB's speech (they normally get advance copies of planned, lengthy contributions to debates)....

Babdoc · 08/03/2018 04:29

Can’t stand her. Or any of the SNP. They have ruined every aspect of life in Scotland for which they have been given devolved responsibility- education, taxation, police, NHS, agriculture.... and their obsession with independence despite all the evidence that it would be an economic disaster, has split the community up here and led to a lot of ill feeling.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 08/03/2018 05:36

What bandoc says.

Many of us in Scotland are, and I don’t say this lightly, devastated at what has happened to key services under SNP rule.

The SNP is like a cult and most of its supporters cult like and not particularly intelligent.

I think Mhairi Black is a good speaker and that is it. There is nothing behind what she says.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 08/03/2018 07:19

I think she is a passionate young woman and that speech was excellent. She gets it that this abuse is directed at her specifically because she is a woman (with an option).

Why she can't see that other women are getting the same abuse from TRAs and men in dresses, and this is a massive part of why women don't want to invite people like this into our safe spaces, I don't know. Whip-induced blind spot?

Gacapa · 08/03/2018 07:20

Can't bear her either. The SNP is a cult party. I lived in Scotland for a long time. When I go back now it's changed under the SNP. And not for the better.

She might be a reasonable public speaker, but she'll never go against her cult or the TRA agenda. The SNP don't give a fuck about women.

QueenLaBeefah · 08/03/2018 07:43

Good speech.

However she has an appalling work ethic and rarely turns up to Westminster or bothers to vote, hold surgeries or reply to her constituents letters. All for £70k plus expenses (which are one of the highest amongst MPs).

And she supports self ID.

goodthinking99 · 08/03/2018 07:50

Great speech from Mhairi, and timely. I have to say living in Scotland I don't recognise any of the doom mongering about the SNP above. I'm not a Nat myself but feel that services have been well maintained, or in some cases improved, under their watch. Particularly when you contrast what's happening south of the border.

And pathetic stereotyping of SNP supporters too, not one I have experienced.

backaftera2yearbreak · 08/03/2018 07:52

I’m not a fan I fb the SNP either but I to say that most of the people who support them are not particularly intelligent is just down right rude. People who don’t share the same views as you are not automatically think.

backaftera2yearbreak · 08/03/2018 07:53

*thick

goodthinking99 · 08/03/2018 07:53

Caveat:I wish she could see the light regarding self ID too

I agree - and I've been a Labour Party member since I was 18*. Scottish Govt has introduced some great initiatives for Scotland (and I like to think some of that is more down to the more collaborative structure of Holyrood rather than SNP). My sister and a friend in Surrey went through the horrors of brain tumours at the same time. The treatment and care received in Scotland (and over three NHS authorities) was a million times better than my friend in Surrey got. This included over the Christmas "crisis". It pains me to say it but SNP ain't all bad.

However the GRA proposals are just so wrong.

*And with a heavy heart I'm resigning today because of the NEC announcement on Self ID.

OOAOML · 08/03/2018 08:06

Hi Olly also Scottish Labour resigning today! To be honest I've been thinking about it for a while as they have been dire. And I didn't even vote for them in 2017. Glad something has finally pushed me out of my inertia.

OllyBJolly · 08/03/2018 08:17

Hello OOAOML. ! Maybe we should start a support group?! Grin

I have been tempted over past few years. Many of my friends have crossed to SNP. Scottish Labour have been dire, you're right, but I always hoped we'd get through it and I think foolishly I clung on to any little shard of light. But no more. No longer believe feminism is compatible with Labour Party membership.
