Who thinks this was a genuine marketing strategy that they only realised was a terrible idea at the last minute?

"Not to worry - we can just tweet that it's ironic!"

OP posts:
pimlicolife · 06/03/2018 19:52

Knowing their branding quite well I'm pretty sure it was ironic. Smile

Callamia · 06/03/2018 19:53

Ironic in the most boring way imaginable.

Trills · 06/03/2018 19:56

If your supposed satire has nothing to distinguish it from the thing you claim to be mocking, you may want to rethink your strategy.

terfing · 06/03/2018 19:57

Would they have done something similar for black people? No? Well then it wasn't a joke

Trills · 06/03/2018 19:57

Honest Brew have a much better way of celebrating IWD.

(if you like beer, Melissa Cole is worth following, she is interesting)

LonginesPrime · 06/03/2018 20:07

Yes - If I were in a pub and someone handed me a bottle of that, I'd want to speak to the manager about how they thought it was ok to sell pink-bottled beer labelled 'beer for girls'.

My first thought wouldn't be to check Twitter in case it was supposed to be ironic!

OP posts:
Sanderz · 06/03/2018 20:11

Oh bless them, their hearts are in the right place. The thing is they've done just about as much as you can to make a parody of that label. The fact that it still falls well short of an obvious joke just goes to show how bad things really are.

Trills · 06/03/2018 20:16

They're donating a share of the sales to charity, so they have that in their favour.

ButteredScone · 06/03/2018 20:28

Genius, genius.

Now we know about this and support the cause but it just controversial enough to create waves and free publicity. Take a bow wow wow, BrewDog marketing folk. Grin

thebewilderness · 06/03/2018 20:30

I think that is called Poe's Law.

BigGreenOlives · 06/03/2018 20:32

& it’s 20% cheaper to represent the pay gap

redshoeblueshoe · 06/03/2018 20:33

So its 20% cheaper if you identify as female

But I don't identify as female
I just am
Does that mean I don't get a discount ?

BonnieF · 06/03/2018 20:39

It’s a completely intentional marketing stunt & just what I would expect from Brewdog.

Brewdog’s brand is ‘edgy’ & iconoclastic. They use the word ‘punk’ a lot, which is slightly odd for a highly commercial brewery.

The beer is good, despite the marketing.

MsP0b · 06/03/2018 20:43

Good point well put @BigGreenOlives !

MsP0b · 06/03/2018 20:44

Reminds me of when Yorkie was "not for girls"

BigGreenOlives · 06/03/2018 20:49

I really didn’t like Yorkie’s, they had a funny texture.

fatasapancake · 06/03/2018 22:11

DH has brought some of this tonight. I think it was a genuine attempt to highlight that pinkification does no-one any favours.

The wording on the label reads

PINK IPA
Punk's for men and Pink's for women. Right? WRONG.

Beer is for everyone and gender is not defined by colour. It's time to throw a molotov cocktail through the glass ceiling.

Pink IPA is our flagship beer, Punk IPA, delivered with a purpose on International Women's Day

For 4 weeks, we're donating 20% of proceeds - the gender pay gap - from Pink IPA and Punk IPA to causes that fight gender inequality. Visit brewdog.com/pink to find out more

Pink IPA - not 'beer for girls'. Beer for equality

(He buys Punk IPA reasonably regularly. He didn't buy it because of the pink-ness)

hipsterfun · 06/03/2018 22:21

Aw, they almost clawed it back there, if only they’d have said sex instead of gender.

Brewdog’s brand is ‘edgy’ & iconoclastic. They use the word ‘punk’ a lot

Zzzzzzzz.

BonnieF · 06/03/2018 22:22

It’s quite a brave move by Brewdog as many people, including journalists and the professionally offended brigade on social media, will inevitably be too thick to get the irony.

Potato25 · 06/03/2018 22:34

'Beer for girls' -- They shouldn't be trying to sell beer to children, that's actually against the law. Girls are children, and women are adult human females.

Trills · 07/03/2018 07:57

I don't think people are "too thick" to get the irony, I think their problem is that the irony is only apparent if you buy the beer and read the smallprint. From the other side of the bar, it looks exactly like the lazy stereotyping that they are attempting to send up.

LonginesPrime · 07/03/2018 10:04

Yes, exactly, Trills.

Without the background knowledge, the small print appears too small to actually start a dialogue in pubs. Sure, someone who's interested in women's issues has bought a bottle and studied it (thanks for doing that, fatasapancake), but who can honestly say they read the fine print on their beer bottle when they're in a pub with their mates?

OP posts:
SnibbleAgain · 07/03/2018 10:38

Doesn't really bother me, to be honest, apart from,

"As part of the campaign for the next four weeks, people who "identify as female" will be able to pick up Pink IPA in any BrewDog bar for 20% less."

So, everyone gets 20% off then. Who isn't going to say "I'm female" to a cashier in a shop for 20% off beer? And of course it's illegal to question them.

IllustriouslyIllogical · 07/03/2018 10:48

I think it's quite good actually, it's a play on their usual Blue Punk label.

I'd read the label - must be a bit sad!

They could have done nothing and had no comments at all - at least this way they've got people talking & from their point of view, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Women aren't really in their target demographic, so their customer base is only going to go up based on this, men will still drink it - because it tastes nice!

Trills · 07/03/2018 12:39

Women aren't really in their target demographic

Why are you assuming that women are not interested in craft beer?
