Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Ru Paul being called a transphobe

goose123 · 06/03/2018 17:45

There's a lot of controversy going on on Twitter as Ru Paul has ruled out the potential for transitioned TIM contestants to appear on Drag Race.

It's interesting as by eliminating sex based restrictions, there's the potential to lose the definition of drag as a concept.

This is a hot debate in the gay community. Look at Drop the T.

OvaHere · 06/03/2018 17:53

I thought TIMs considered drag to be offensive towards them? Why do they want to participate.

Women aren't allowed on Drag Race so surely RuPaul is actually validating them?

Confused
TeaEnjoyingRadientFeminist · 06/03/2018 18:10

I agree with OvaHere though, it makes very little logical sense when teamed with the 'drag is insulting' argument we have heard so much.

Would a TIF be allowed to compete I wonder?

TeaEnjoyingRadientFeminist · 06/03/2018 18:10

*ignore the random 'though'! Editing fail.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/03/2018 18:13

Why is this controversial Hmm

Surely drag is men dressing as women, if you don't identify as a man, surely it isn't drag?

swivelchair · 06/03/2018 18:27

Ru is an astute man, he knows exactly what he's doing I think, and he's in an excellent place to put forth gender critical ideas. The last 'apology' tweet doesn't ring true to me, I think it was a non-apology, and he's not changed his opinion at all.

SimonBridges · 06/03/2018 18:35

If I as an actual woman identify as a man can I take part?

Hulo · 06/03/2018 18:40

I'm very confused too. Surely since drag celebrates men in dresses, inviting trans women should be considered the ultimate insult and probably deadly

shedalight · 06/03/2018 18:45

It's a glorious example of the twists and turns that transactivists go to to ensure that they maintain their place at the top of the 'victim' hierarchy. They are oppressed no matter what they do and it is all the fault of the rest of transphobic society who do not ensure that they are centred in every single thing.
If your ideology and language shifts at every single point, then it's simple to ensure that you're always oppressed, no matter who, when, where or what!

ShortandAnnoying · 06/03/2018 18:46

They had a wedding challenge once with real couples where the women were dressed as grooms and the men as brides. The women looked absolutely tiny next to their brides. 1.bp.blogspot.com/-dQVhdViDWGs/U2Ae5s2tR0I/AAAAAAAAa_8/gC_E-4GNkSI/s1600/01.png

BigDeskBob · 06/03/2018 18:47

When I first heard about this, I assumed it was about excluding female transpeople. Silly me, it's all about the tim again.

Notwellbitch · 06/03/2018 18:56

He also said that "bio women" should also be excluded. What's the problem here? I thought trans women want to be treated the same as any other women?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 06/03/2018 18:57

Absolutely ridiculous

What the hell is wrong with people

As others have mentioned the whole point of drag queens is that they are men dressing as women

If a woman dresses as a woman she is a woman

If a transwomen dresses as a woman she is a transwomen

It really smacks of two year olds wanting to pick something up and throwing a tantrum when they realise they have to put down the thing they are already holding

AtiaoftheJulii · 06/03/2018 19:11

The last 'apology' tweet doesn't ring true to me, I think it was a non-apology, and he's not changed his opinion at all.

Yes, there seems to be some sort of cunningly coded message in On “Drag Race,” he noted, “the only thing we’ve ever screened for is charisma uniqueness nerve and talent.” Grin

IlikemyTeahot · 06/03/2018 19:18

This reminds of a scenario with my kids...

•Kid 1 Primarily eats meat but also enjoys veg.
•Kid 2 Is vegetarian by choice.
Kid 1: "I would like a little vegetarian food
with my meat dish"
Kid 2: "well that's not fair"
Parent: "It is ok for Kid 1 to have both if
thats what Kid 1 would like."
Kid 2: "well I don't get meat, it's not fair
kid1 gets veg!"
Parent: "You are welcome to have
some meat."
Kid 2: "No it's not what I want!"
Parent: "So what's the Issue?"
Kid 2: "Why shouldn't I be able to have it if I
want it even though I decided it's not for
me" (pre-teen logic)
Parent: "well it's not that you can't have
meat but you told me you didnt want it
anymore because you felt it didn't suit your
beliefs. It took some getting used to
but now you seem happy with your choice"
Kid 2: ~acts offended~mumbles about
unfairness of it all.
Parent: ~rolls eyes~reminds kid 2 that they made their decision and while they have our full support they are to remember they're not being 'excluded' from eating meat but it no longer fits with their choice of diet. Kid 2 should not feel upset about the options available to Kid 1. Kid 2 made their own choice based on personal beliefs and different preferences.
Also remind Kid 2 that there may be other options available for them and if we cannot immediately find an alternative then perhaps we should think of ways we can create one.

Gotta love em

Can you imagine the uproar if they told a trans contestant that they didn't look feminine enough or that their beard was showing.

We're told that you constantly have to affirm a female identity with TIM's how can you do that and critique their feminine appearance at the same time?

LonginesPrime · 06/03/2018 19:29

Why are people on Twitter saying RuPaul has no right to be the gatekeeper to drag?

It's his show.

Elendon · 06/03/2018 19:33

#droptheT

vampirina · 06/03/2018 19:39

So far it's women and the LGB community who are largely having their rights compromised by TRAs. I honestly think when it becomes more of a mainstream issue that effects heterosexual men, there'll be a huge backlash. But (generalising obviously) it won't be as articulate, considered and researched as the conversations being had by feminists etc currently. So it'll be even easier to dismiss.

Whenever a TRA related issue like this arises I find myself thinking the world has truly gone mad. But seemingly the majority can't see it.

As PP pointed out, it would be a complete minefield if trans people competed and I'd bet the vast majority would have no interest in doing so.

TwatFacedBitch · 06/03/2018 19:43

This is so funny

LizzieSiddal · 06/03/2018 19:44

“Bio woman”

If there has to be a phrase, distinguishing us, I like this one.

It makes it so obvious that our biology is v important.

MrsJoshDun · 06/03/2018 22:10

Well if TIMs are going to be allowed to partake then they have to let biological women partake as well.

So then it just becomes a fancy dress show/clothes modelling show?

But yeah, I would have thought that TIMS would consider it literal murder to be told they could take part in a drag contest.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 06/03/2018 22:17

I thought the whole idea of drag was to dress in an outrageous parody of femininity and be as outrageous on stage as possible.

Politics, sex, etc, no subject is off limits for drag queens who openly admit to being men (gay or straight).
