Crowdfunder Women to Labour Party (on All-Women Shortlists) Official Statement

JenniferJames · 06/03/2018 11:36

'Our solicitors have, today, sent our pre-action protocol and submissions letter to the Labour Party in respect of the definition of “woman” for protected positions and all-women shortlists.

Our solicitors are Bhogal Partners, and through them we have instructed Amanda Jones of Counsel, who is a tenant at Great James Street Chambers in London. The letter was drafted by Miss Jones after consultation with the solicitors and on instructions.

We hope that the Labour Party will take our letter and concerns seriously, and consider the points raised in it carefully. '

They won't, they want this to go to court.

100 women are resigning from the Labour party tomorrow.

JenniferJames · 06/03/2018 11:45

I understand their frustrations but it is our Labour party and what we make it. I would urge all the women to reconsider, stay and fight and help win this campaign with us.

Much better to flood the party and drain the sexism. We are going to be the next government, whatever happens. We women can have our say on policy now if we stand together.

Solidarity

LifelongVaginaOwner · 06/03/2018 11:46

Sorry. That's not solidarity. That's Stockholm Syndrome.

BlooperReel · 06/03/2018 11:47

I will follow the case with interest.

Patodp · 06/03/2018 11:48

The Labour party's official statement is that

"We have an inclusive definition of the word woman"

They have carefully and deliberately chosen that statement.

Will the Labour party be allowed to use a non-dictionary definition of the word woman?

Jennifer James. I admire everything you are doing and I hope this course of action brings about a conclusion that works for all.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 06/03/2018 11:53

I'm sorry Jennifer but I think you are wrong. Labour are never going to listen to women who stay. They are too used to us fetching and carrying.

And did you see the regrets of the lovely Chris on FB? We are all middle class (for that read worthless)

Where is the statement, Pato? Do you have a link?

I haven't seen it.

MsMalcontent · 06/03/2018 11:56

This came up on my FB today with hundreds of likes and hearts. So, I don't think we're anywhere near winning the battle.

drinkswineoutofamug · 06/03/2018 12:01

Sorry I know your labour Jennifer, but what is the stance from the other parties on this. I've seen today that the Labour Party are to offer self I'd transsexuals guaranteed rights under the Labour Party. I have emailed my conservative mp about this, but as usual no reply as yet.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/03/2018 12:03

While everyone gets stick into Labour we are forgetting that it is the Tories who got us into this mess in the first place and who will just as quickly and without thought or guilt sell us down the fucking river.

drinkswineoutofamug · 06/03/2018 12:05

How did the tories get us into this mess?
All I read about regarding tories is bloody brexit.
I need educating please

Popchyk · 06/03/2018 12:05

Oh, thanks, MsMalcontent.

So they've decided that the term women actually means biological females and biological males then?

Not surprised. Certainly be interested in how the current law sits with that new definition that they've come up with.

Patodp · 06/03/2018 12:05

Popchyk

The full NEC statement which is set to be approved by the party was published in Huffington Post.

Sorry to derail the thread

JenniferJames · 06/03/2018 12:08

'Sorry. That's not solidarity. That's Stockholm Syndrome.'

Another mental health slur by one of the usual suspects. Makes a change from 'do you need a break?' 'worried about you' ;you seem a little paranoid' etc

Play the ball not the man, eh.

Maria Miller first proposed introducing self-ID.
Theresa May initially backed introducing self-ID seeing it as a vote winner.

It's been kicked into the long grass after a huge wave of objections.

The labour party picked up on it and have decided to use self-ID as their vote winner.

Tory and Labour have both taken the idea from overseas, it was first introduced in Norway, and has spread far and wide.

I am opposed because I am terrified of the UK becoming like Canada. It is routinely reported that Canada have no problems and it's going swimmingly. This is a lie.

Patodp · 06/03/2018 12:12

It's unfair to expect Jennifer James to encourage women to quit Labour just because that's what you think.

JenniferJames · 06/03/2018 12:12

'what is the stance from the other parties on this.'

Lib Dems, Greens, WEP fully on board with self-id as policy. Tories, who touted this change to the law in the first place, gone very quiet. Most MPs are very, very quiet. Only a handful have nailed their colours to the mast, five or six in Labour for it, two tory MPs against it.

It is politically toxic, no one can come out in favour or against without upsetting a LARGE group of vocal camaigners. We will have to wait and see how this plays out.

Munroe Bergdorf going today is an early sign that the self-id train is about to derail.

OP posts:
terfing · 06/03/2018 12:12

Is there enough money in he crowdfunder to take this issue all the way to court? If not, I feel that Labour may call your bluff knowing that we can't afford to fight. Sad

KnittedBobbleHat · 06/03/2018 12:13

There's no way I will ever vote Labour again after this shit show

OvaHere · 06/03/2018 12:16

Any guesses as to what their inclusive definition of woman is?

It's going to have to be either a bunch of superficial, sexist stereotypes or a woman is anyone who feels like one.

Here on MN we've tried many times to come up with a definition that includes women and self identified women with penises but excludes men.

It's not possible to do so.

PositivelyPERF · 06/03/2018 12:17

What do you mean? Is Bergdorf getting kicked out? 🤞🏻

nauticant · 06/03/2018 12:18

If we're going to look for root causes I'd say the rot started with the Gender Recognition Act 2004. This codified into law the concept that "yes, yes, of course it isn't true, we all know this, but let's pretend it is true".

To be fair, it was JC that picked it up during the GE campaign or shortly after as part of the winning young votes - the tories jumped on the band wagon and tried to steal their thunder when TM announced it -(like labour did with inheritance tax in around 2007), probably to look good in the middle of the brexit stuff and nearly losing the election.

This of course does not explain why Maria Miller was pushing it so hard in the first place Hmm

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/03/2018 12:19

It's been put on ice for now while the Tories watch how things play out in Scotland and in the Labour party.
