Do we need/want a book about the issues around trans and self-ID?

Hi,
I've been lurking on these threads for a very long while, and have changed my name because I'm quite worried about being laughed out of town.
I'm a relatively young person trying to get a toehold in academia, and right now I need to focus on finishing my Master's degree.
However, I've really enjoyed reading books in the past by people who have challenged the status quo on certain issues, just pulling one out of the air Robert Whitaker's books about psychotropic drugs and the history of the mentally ill, and, although this is a massive ambition, I was wondering whether there would be any interest in a book on this subject? I know research on detransitioned people doesn't get funded, but there could be chapters on feminist theory (on both sides), people who are happy transitioning and those who have detransitioned, the Mermaids perspective and the perspective of the lesbian community, the effect of online forums, and the legal background including cases such as Goodwin v UK.
I'm not going to say, please don't be too hard on me, but anyone who could give their honest opinion about whether this is even worth thinking about, please let me know!
Thanks and thanks for all these threads, some of which are real eye-openers.

I suppose it would be an interesting time to begin. History is in the process of being made with far reaching results.

It would be difficult to remain impartial which sounds like you'd like it to be?

Yes, this is needed, it has to be very affordable. Please consider releasing it as a 99p Ebook as well as hard copy.
It will be difficult to remain impartial on the subject of sterilising gay and non gender conforming children. A lot of people don't realise thats the outcome of puberty blockers and transitioning children.

There's also a need for a feminist primer and basic history, one that suitable for children and young teens as well as adults, if there are any authors on the board.

You'd have to include a lot around how gender stereotypes damage both sexes long term (education, emotional intelligence) and have the potential to lead young people to believe they must change sex. You'd need to include very early learning child development etc.

Sections on the media and advertising.

I think it is needed. There are many, many books on transgenderism coming out this year and I suspect most of them are first person accounts from a pro-trans perspective.

Yes.

LangCleg · 04/03/2018 12:47

It is needed.

The problem with the likelihood of any such book is that it would come out via an academic press and cost a fortune.

A Kindle ebook would be great. Or an Unbound or Kickstarter crowdfund for one? That is, if Unbound or Kickstarter would actually accept such a book.

Is it the sort of thing that potentially might have contributors, eg different chapters by different people? I can't work out if that would be a benefit or loose the impartiality.
