It's measured, well written, well argued and kind. I expect it will be torn apart as we're not allowed to talk about ROGD. Well worth a read

You beat me to it, I was just about to post that! It is absolutely excellent. Very thought-provoking. I'd be interested to read the views of any mental health professionals on this.

Don't expect anything positive from the BACP :(

This comment on the article (my emphasis):

“Thank you, Lisa, for writing this excellent article. As the mother of a daughter who developed ROGD at age 14, I can attest to the fact that it is a nightmare. It is beyond appalling that doctors performed a mastectomy and hysterectomy on her before her 18th birthday, without my consent, and that it was fully funded by the United States government. The doctors who mutilated my daughter should have criminal charges brought against them, but are instead protected by law. Parents of ROGD children are fighting back and we are not going to stop! Thank you for your dedication.”

I have no words.

That makes me feel sick, @AwkwardSquad. This is going to be such a huge scandal in the very near future.

CapnHaddock · 03/03/2018 09:51

That wasn't there when I read the article earlier. How can this be happening to our children? Mutilated and sterilised by the very people who are supposed to care for us

I really, really hope that in most countries of the world this could not happen. I don't think the NHS would do it for an underage child. Difficult to legislate for parents who take their child abroad to get access to treatments that the NHS won't do (e.g. CEO of Mermaids Sad Angry) but most people couldn't afford to do that, fortunately.

Surely the only reason most parents or guardians who go along with this only do so because they genuinely believe that if they don't the child is at risk of suicide or serious self-harm? If they had better support and information to confirm that that risk isn't removed by this kind of mediaeval butchery maybe it would help.

People I have seen often have a fantasy that transitioning would make them into a “new person,” free of all the old difficulties. I think the social contagion aspect may relate to the availability of the trans narrative as a compelling solution to pain and distress.

Thank you for sharing this. Flowers

Yes, the narrative that transchildren will kill themselves is very pervasive and we all know from posters on here that if you don't fully support your child, there are dire consequences. And if you don't toe the Mermaids line, you're cut off from support.

This article by Brynn Tannehill (the TIM quoted in Marchiano's article) in the HuffPo www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/six-facts-about-affirming-therapy-for-youth_us_588639e0e4b08f5134b62325 is all about 'facts'. Only they aren't facts at all.

Interestingly Tannehill is ex-military. Why are so many TRAs ex-military?

I also wonder if they join the military precisely because they feel they don't conform to the gender stereotypes so it's a sort of self-inflicted conversion therapy?

Dunno. It would be interesting to study it but of course, you'd never get funding

Maybe bring scarred by toxic masculinity has brought about a rejection of the male self.
