You may have seen that a letter written by Stephanie to magazine BACP magazine Therapy Today has been 'apologised' for after transactivists complained. Attached is the letter - and the apology. TT is getting accused of being a hate group - and is effectively being censored. LETTERS to editors no longer allowed..If you agree with Stephanie's letter, or oppose the closing down of debate, please get behind her. This is not a settled science. The Tavistock Clinic are proposing further research due to lack of clinical evidence to inform outcomes re: puberty blockers, social transition or co-occurring Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Btw anyone else think that someone a TRA has read the Transgender Trend document and mistaken 'conversation therapy' for 'conversion therapy' and complained to BACP

Lily Madigan made the same mistake on Twitter last week and tried to claim it was a typo.

That 'editor' needs to learn how to use a comma for starters...

Signed the petition. Very sensible and factual letter. There was no reason to apologise.

I was expecting a much sharper letter - that was polite & factual. Are they going to apologise for the apology Confused

I'm confused - isnt the petition the pressure that resulted in the apology? Why are people signing?

HawkeyeInConfusion · 01/03/2018 23:53

I wondered the same waddle. It's the petition that called for the apology isn't it? I'm certainly not signing that.

I’m off to find Stephanie on twitter. She is a star for all the work she’s doing.

I sent a 4th Wave Now retweet to the BACP asking if their guidelines were patient centered and how that squares with blanket endorsement of a particular therapy.
Thanks for posting this thread. I've not been on twitter that much today.

This is serious beyond transactivism. It's hard enough for me (I suffer from depression) to trust anyone with my mind without bodies such as the BACP showing this kind of attitude.

This is beyond disappointment with such a body.
It dents people's trust on those who can help them if they see this kind of cavalier attitude to .... I mean the gist of what Stephanie says is "Make sure." What could be wrong with this or with studying it further... to make sure?
Bad move.

Wow! That's horrific.

The silencing continues and intensifies.

Frightening.

That fucking petition!!
Throwing in the high rates of suicide bullshit and calling any form of counselling 'conversion therapy'

It's frightening how this is being forced at every turn. Where the fuck has all the common sense gone?!

Our kids are collateral damage to them. They don't give a shit other than if more kids say they are trans, it gives them more power. The fact it is mostly young girls transing too will be merely a bonus for the women hating TRAs

Lily Madigan was responsible for the misreading and furore. Wanker.

The petition is AGAINST the letter.
I wonder if Gendered Intelligence was behind it (the form looks similar to the ones they use for their course registration). Their courses are pretty expensive and I can see that they run one specifically for therapists so they'd have good reason to want this letter discredited.

DO NOT SIGN THE PETITION! (Unless ty have fully read it and agree that the editor was right to publish that comment.

This is actually one of the most frightening things I've read on the trans front. That letter is so thoughtful and politely worded - and the editorial response doesn't even dignify its condemnation with any kind of reasoning! How could that come from the body representing counsellors and psychotherapists? How could that group find it so contentious to posit that there might be other feelings and issues beyond those someone presents with?!

Stephanie, thank you for your enerringly sensible and considered work and advocacy - you're on the right side of history.

Don’t know

Don’t the editor didn’t just ask them to send in a letter and publish that.
There must have been a serious row.

I agree, my son decided a few years ago that he is now a female. I can't say that anything has changed in behaviour or appearance but apparently it is enough to think to be . (If you get my drift) It has caused all sorts of upset, distress, anxiety in the family. I am constantly ill with anxiety but apparently I am being unreasonable. Don't get me wrong I know some are really in the wrong body, but I also feel that many just don't think it through and could possibly be something else, sorry I know I have put that badly, but don't know how else to explain.

christ. well the editor has made herself look like a moron to anyone who isn't experiencing full cognitive dissonance. it feels like such a little thing to do but I will tweet Stephanie Arai Davies with my support.

Nobody is in the wrong body because that would be impossible.

I agree, when you think about it, it is completely impossible to be born in the wrong body. There is no such thing as a separate soul.

That doesn't mean to say that gender dysphoria isn't real and highly distressing to some people

Report
Fekko · 02/03/2018 08:26

Someone has kicked off - maybe there was something in the letter that contradicts the BACP line, some comments or fact that can’t be verified/not true, the organisation has been discredited in some way or her boss or lawyer has just told her to print the letter. Someone has most likely cited equality laws and the grey area therein with regards to transgender issues.

I showed it to someone who knows about these things and she said that it’s usually to cover backsides against some sort of backlash.

Report
Fekko · 02/03/2018 08:28

I dont think you can be born in the ‘wrong body’. Has anyone ever heard a physically disabled person at this? I haven’t.

Real gender dysphoria seems fairly rare. I don't include those who have become alienated from their bodies by compulsively wanking over sissy porn.

This is so shocking. Stephanie Davies-Arai speaks so much sense - her parenting book is a good read too - and what an outrageous statement from a supposedly scientific body. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.
