Female screenwriters now having to compete against people who femme-identify

Women are hugely underrepresented in both film and tv screenwriting. Statistics include the fact that in 2015 only 11% of films had a female screenwriter. Last year, over a five-month period women accounted for 30% of TV screenwriting. ITV have recently released their upcoming shows for 2018 and of all the drama output only one show was written by a woman.

I have now stumbled across this and to be honest it really does boil my piss.

Piss boiling too.

The fact that it says:

Priority will be given to scripts that explore themes of gender equality, challenge traditional gender roles and explore feminist issues.

makes me even more frustrated.

'Femme identified' Hmm

Seriously, who comes up with this andie shite? It's just made up!

Thisusernamethingistricky · 28/02/2018 09:34

Oh, I don't know who andie is?!

Thisusernamethingistricky · 28/02/2018 09:39

Priority will be given to scripts that explore themes of gender equality, challenge traditional gender roles and explore feminist issues.

People just aren't using their brain when it comes to what 'challenging traditional gender roles' actually means.

It does mean that if you are a man, you can still enjoy wearing make up and dresses, drink sugary cocktails and listen to Cher, and still be all man.

It does not mean you can get some hair extensions and a pair of tits and then barge your way into female only changing rooms, rape crisis centres or screen writing competitions.

That, exactly.

Let's submit 'MN: The Movie' and see if they take it up.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/02/2018 10:06

So what issues are they going to explore, the incredible trauma of lesbians not agreeing to meet up with you when you send them a picture of your penis on Tinder? The angst of not being forced to wear a scratchy, uncomfortable dress to church when you were 7 like your sister? The deeply affirming experience of telling women on social media to stop talking about periods/pregnancy?

It's not just that they're unlikely to produce anything that resonates with women, it's that they're likely to produce a bunch of sexist nonsense that reinforces all the stuff most women and girls have been kicking back against since childhood and packages it as the true spiritual essence of womanhood.

To be fair, while the language in that call is achingly inclusive it's a female-led project and their first reading went to two female Drs working in STEM.

first persistent and nasty reading

That's irrelevant strawberries. These competitions are considered to be an important gateway into the industry.
