I wanted to reply to a post someone made in another thread about trade unions but now can't find the thread (because feminism chat is so busy these days!) so am posting a new thread.
They were posting about whether any trade unions were gender critical and, while I doubt any would be openly so, it might be worth trying to piece together information on which are the most gung-ho on transactivism.
I've just moved jobs so (as usual) plan to join one of the unions my employer recognises but at the moment am wondering whether I would actually have any protection if I faced a disciplinary for being associated with gender critical views (not that I would dare voice them in work).
I know (as a former union rep in a previous job many moons ago) that unions represent all employees no matter what they have done and I know of people who have done some pretty terrible things who have still be represented by their union (and rightly so - They are entitled to union representation). But when trans issues come into the frame all normal practice seems to go out the window so I wouldn't be confident of having union support if I needed it.
I know there are members of Unite and Unison who are involved in the group which is accessing Labour Party records to target feminists and try to get them thrown out of the Labour Party. I'm presuming these people also have access to Unite and Unison members' records - Has there been any word from Unison and Unite on what action they are taking to protect their members' personal data from misuse?
I also know (from the frustrated rantings of my gc girlfriend who is a Unison member) that Unison are publishing pro-transactivist propaganda (eg dismissing all objections to self-ID as 'transphobia', sending out leaflets to its members on 'how to be a trans ally' etc).
Does anyone have any experiences (positive or negative) of other trade unions on this issue?
