Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Trade unions

I wanted to reply to a post someone made in another thread about trade unions but now can't find the thread (because feminism chat is so busy these days!) so am posting a new thread.

They were posting about whether any trade unions were gender critical and, while I doubt any would be openly so, it might be worth trying to piece together information on which are the most gung-ho on transactivism.

I've just moved jobs so (as usual) plan to join one of the unions my employer recognises but at the moment am wondering whether I would actually have any protection if I faced a disciplinary for being associated with gender critical views (not that I would dare voice them in work).

I know (as a former union rep in a previous job many moons ago) that unions represent all employees no matter what they have done and I know of people who have done some pretty terrible things who have still be represented by their union (and rightly so - They are entitled to union representation). But when trans issues come into the frame all normal practice seems to go out the window so I wouldn't be confident of having union support if I needed it.

I know there are members of Unite and Unison who are involved in the group which is accessing Labour Party records to target feminists and try to get them thrown out of the Labour Party. I'm presuming these people also have access to Unite and Unison members' records - Has there been any word from Unison and Unite on what action they are taking to protect their members' personal data from misuse?

I also know (from the frustrated rantings of my gc girlfriend who is a Unison member) that Unison are publishing pro-transactivist propaganda (eg dismissing all objections to self-ID as 'transphobia', sending out leaflets to its members on 'how to be a trans ally' etc).

Does anyone have any experiences (positive or negative) of other trade unions on this issue?

Not sure but following. I remember your other post.

I don't know the ins and outs of unions but I know Kiri Tunks is gc and I think in the NUT (or what ever it's called now.)

I would really like to know where they stand actually.

Ouchbirthhurted · 26/02/2018 16:07

This is crazy. They shouldn't 'stand' anywhere. They are Unions, as a PP said their job is to protect the rights of ALL those who work for them, whatever their beliefs.

I was going to post something similar myself, specifically in relation to teaching.

NASUWT have published a "guide to transgender" doc that is full on self id, anti gc. I was also suprised they had 'a stance', never mind 'this stance', especially since far more members will be women than trans.

Telltaletall · 26/02/2018 16:15

Interesting holycheeseplant, if that is true all gc teachers should switch from NASUWT to NUT and explain why.

I'll do further investigation in terms of teaching and report back.

holycheeseplant · 26/02/2018 21:53

Probably, but I'm
Not clear on the nut stance - I'm Rubbish at unions and politics but in the NUT praps I'll open the magazines from now on

She's had some flack for it, brave woman.

And another one:

I think I vaguely remember this but hadn't read it fully or linked it to the NUT.

What this man said has definitely been said by professional colleagues of mine about young children we have taught. So, we'd potentially have a disciplinary, but be cleared!
