Setting up a professional women's network?

Posting here as opposed to activism for traffic.

Has anyone done it? If so: how did you go about it?

Triggered by yet another appalling interaction between myself and a very senior male colleague, swiftly followed by a meeting in which a (female) client mentioned the most horrific episode with her boss, I think I've finally found the necessary impetus to actually go there, take ownership and set it up!

I'm looking to establish a regular, open to all locally residing or working women in the general field of 'tech', regardless of their role, employment situation etc. drinks-and-network kind of thing with the long-term goal of establishing it as something more formal eventually.

I'm currently looking at roughly the following 1st steps:

  • Contact women in my personal network whom I judge to be sympathetic; invite for some initial regular drinks
  • Leverage own (female) downline in order to get some initial organisational structure going
  • Obtain C-Level sponsorship within own organisation from a female lead
  • Identify influencers among initial attendees and get them to do the same within their own organisations
  • Set up governance structures and obtain initial funding from employer via C-level sponsor & HR diversity officer
  • Define formal organisation and goals, etc.
  • Get the fucker off the ground

End goal: establish a formally organised, locally focussed network of professional women that provides mutual support, offers career opportunities for women who need to escape chauvinist bosses, organises events, training, etc.

Am I forgetting something? What else do I need as 1st steps?

I've never done anything like it before, but it needs doing - badly!

Have you looked at MeetUp? You pay to set up and manage a group and can allow who you want to join.

Thanks!

MeetUp is an option. Technology-wise I'm currently thinking even simpler: Outlook meetings to initial invitees with permission to forward to anyone the invitee thinks may be interested.

The eventual set-up will have to include its own website etc. of course - not a big deal seeing as we're in tech, luckily! Smile

I'm a lot more worried about how I can get the necessary engagement going.

Would it be tactically wiser not to go unabashedly feminist to start with and make it a 'get to know your industry colleagues' kind of thing? Or do I make it a 'stick it to your fucking chauvinist bosses' operation from the get-go?

I'm reasonably confident of my ability to obtain C-level sponsorship and funding via my own employer - filed under 'perks of being a token woman manager'.

@strawberriesaregood, what were your initial steps? How do mine look in comparison?

What you've got going seems quite similar to my goal - industry speakers and all!

I'm confident that I won't have to pull it off on my own. I've got a C-level sponsor in mind and know her to be sympathetic to feminist issues. I'm also a manager who's built a team with significant female representation over the past few years, so I'll have my own women to help out.

Hmmm ... thinking!

I will eventually need some sort of corporate sponsorship etc. - mainly because I will need funding (and, in all fairness, the corporations employing the male leads behaving like arses owe us as much).

Would I fare better by setting up a series of informal get-togethers initially?

My background is very much 'global corporation', so I may be over-focusing on formal structures.
