One young activist woman's story of how her liberal feminism flipped into radical, once she analysed the two definitions of 'gender'.

Thank you for this.

This plus something else today has prompted me to do something I needed to.

That was interesting, but I don't think it answers a common TRA argument: if the female gender is oppressed, that is to say, the social role associated with females is oppressive, why do some males identify with it? They argue they have no choice because of 'innate gender '.

HairyBallTheorem · 22/02/2018 19:40

Well, the answer is obvious when viewed from the outside - they are so steeped in misogyny and a pornified view of women that they don't realise women's oppression is genuine with real-world consequences in every single part of everyday life, they think its some sort of kinky BDSM bedroom game. Which, for them, is actually true, because if push came to shove they could opt out of being oppressed, on account of them not actually being biologically female.

NotTerfNorCis · 22/02/2018 19:43

Yes that's true. They do hate being called AGPs though. Hmm

Gacapa · 22/02/2018 19:46

Yes, exactly. As many of us have observed, there don't seem to be many men who feel innately female because they can't stop thinking about ironing.

Unless they're dressed as a French maid.

HairyBallTheorem · 22/02/2018 19:49

Does anyone remember that "are you transgender" online questionnaire someone posted a link to? We all came out as transmen, IIRC, even Lass (who by her own admission doesn't actually own a pair trousers, and always says she isn't a feminist - though she's a damn sight more feminist in my eyes than many a writer on Everyday Meninism).

It had a question on it about whether you got turned on by the thought of doing housework while dressed as a French maid.

The scary thing was that the questionnaire was actually intended to be taken seriously.

I watched this some time ago and I think it's very thought provoking.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 22/02/2018 22:39

Really good.

She doesn't address the pressures that might cause male people to identify as feminine. She does address some of the pressures that might cause female people to identify as masculine. But her underlying point is that any such identifications are based on a misunderstanding of what gender is.
