The murder of Samia Shaid

Did anyone watch this last night? It broke my heart. She was raped and killed purely because she was a woman who wanted to live her own life and not do what men wanted her to do. It's disgusting that the British government has done nothing - Samia's father got away with it. What message does that send to men who think they can kill a woman for "honour"?

It also shows how bollox the argument that women are women purely because they feel that way is. She was married off and then killed because she was a woman. Because she had XX chromosomes.

Heart-breaking.

Sorry. Title should read Shahid.

I will watch this later. Sounds awful. Violence against women isn't taken seriously enough in general. Then add in the spineless cultural relativism that is practised by many in this country and women from her culture remain doubly vulnerable.

It was a very upsetting documentary. DH cried. I got furious.

The poor girl had the huge courage to make the physical break from her family and that horrendous cousin/husband. But she couldn't quite make the emotional break and that vulnerability is, in the end, what allowed them to kill her.

The father has since died. The ex-husband is still in custody in Pakistan but there is little physical evidence as to which of them did the deed and his confession is not admissible in court because the Pakistani police have a reputation for torturing confessions out of suspects. So justice is unlikely to be served.

I'm watching this now

I'm always disgusted by these so called "honour" killings. Purely because a woman dared not to do what she was told

Soubriquet · 22/02/2018 12:29

Fucking useless courts!!

He admitted raping her and strangling her but because he confessed to the police, it was inadmissible as evidence.

Therefore, whilst everyone was convinced she was murdered, they had no evidence!

How the fuck can this happen?!

BigEthel · 22/02/2018 12:41

How can this happen and the UK government does nothing?

I really wish the phrase "honour killing" could be abolished. Where is the honour here?

Pancakeflipper · 22/02/2018 16:35

I watched this. My son watched some of it with me and I was trying to explain the concept of 'honour killing' to him - it sounded ridiculous.

A relative of mine was in the police force working in Bradford and has always said there are many girls uncounted for who have died in honour killings. But the communities used to close down and make it so difficult to get any evidence. From the TV programme last night - not much has changed in recent years.

Good luck to her friends who tried to support her and allowed their version of the story to be told.

I will watch this. Agree that "honour killing" is an inappropriate phrase for the media and criminal justice system to use.
