In the Olympics women are "girls"

I'm a bit fed up with the women competitors being called "girls" when I'm watching the Olympics. And I've only heard female commentators do it! Watching the women's Skeleton at the moment and the commentator just said "oh good girl" about one of the competitors, in the same tone as people use when speaking to toddlers.

I don't think we'd hear a commentator say "oh good boy" about a male competitor.
Sigh...

AGREED! I was thinking the same thing when I passed a poster on the tube for the musical "Girl from the North Country". She's a woman, a bloody woman mutters crossly

iklboo · 16/02/2018 17:19

I heard one of the commentators correct herself a couple of times from 'girl' to 'woman'. She sounded really self conscious about it - maybe the message is getting through.

GrouchyKiwi · 16/02/2018 17:23

Robin Cousins calls the skating competitors boys and girls. Fine for the 15 year old girl from Russia but not for the rest.

Noticed one of the presenters talking about the Girls' Skeleton too.

I hate it.

I used as an intro to a recent PSHE discussion on sexism (I'm a teacher). Shocking!

HoneyWheeler · 16/02/2018 17:32

God this is driving me nuts! They did something similar in the summer olympics, saying the female competitors were wearing 'costumes' as opposed to, you know, uniforms 🙄

Take the point re sport but not sure about that one- I think in certain contexts , and folk music is one, "girl" is ok for young woman.

And do you object to The Girls of Slender Means or Edna O'Brien's "Girls" novels?

PiffIeandWiffle · 16/02/2018 23:04

Do any of you ladies actually live in the real world?

Women refer to themselves and each other as "girls" all the time - just because you personally don't like it, it doesn't mean it's an issue.

Other side of the coin is that men do refer to themselves and each other as "boys".

It hurts & belittles no-one & bothers no-one outside of these hallowed pages....

Downing street any where near the real world?

I don’t mind if the commentator says girls and boys, but it’s stupid when they say girls and men as they were doing about skiing.

Stoatofdisarray - Girl from the North Country is named after the song by Bob Dylan.

PinkAvocado · 16/02/2018 23:25

This annoys me too. And it annoys me more when people can’t be bothered to think why it is demeaning.

NorthernLurker · 16/02/2018 23:30

Chemmy Alcott was very careful to correct herself when she talked about 'the girls'. I heard her do it at least twice and I thought that was a sign of progress tbh. Mind you if I heard a male commentator correcting themselves that's when I'd really hang out bunting!

bridgetoc · 16/02/2018 23:36

Get a grip OP.........

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 16/02/2018 23:38

I agree OP very irritating when its not reciprocated

Wasnt there something about primark and girls vs mens changing rooms

feelslikearockandahardplace · 16/02/2018 23:43

Reminded me of this video I watched last year about Girls vs Women

Destinysdaughter · 16/02/2018 23:58

Yes I noticed this too, it was like she couldn't help herself, realised what she'd said, then suddenly corrected herself! Tbf, I think it was the snowboarding races she was commenting on and there are girls as young as 16 in it.

PiffIeandWiffle · 17/02/2018 10:27

Maybe her bosses are getting fed up with having to read complaints from people with nothing better to do......

AngryAttackKittens · 17/02/2018 10:29

Excellent illustration of what the other thread about the use of the word "ladies" tends to indicate on this thread.

Mouthandtrousersall · 17/02/2018 10:39

I experience this whist using online dating websites, in a large proportion of approaches men would address me as "girl" (I am in my 50s).

In the end I started writing back saying this was an adult site and if they were looking for children they were in the wrong place.

AngryAttackKittens · 17/02/2018 10:42

I was once referred to as a girl by the office work experience bloke, who was about 19. I was 37. He got a "really, dude?" and a whole lot more embarrassment than he'd bargained for. Hopefully enough for him not to call a woman almost old enough to be his mum that again.

bridgetoc · 17/02/2018 15:44

This really is the sort of nonsense that gives feminism a bad name. Concentrate on the things that matter.........

Equal pay for an equal job etc etc.......

I can't speak for the winter olympics, because I don't watch it, but pundits and commentators in football and cricket call male players 'boy' all the time. Nobody cares because they aren't crazy!

Stop trying to be offended all the time.......

Nickynackynoodle · 17/02/2018 15:47

YANBU OP, my boss calls all women “girls”and he’s a barely literate nurse. Even the surgeons and senior civil servants who outshine him in every way possible are “girls”. Patronising twat.

AssassinatedBeauty · 17/02/2018 15:50

Ah @bridgetoc the old misapprehension that people can only think about, care about and act about one thing at a time. Presumably you never have minor gripes about anything because you're busy focussing on world peace and a cure for all known diseases all the time?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/02/2018 15:54

assassinated

bridge has thoughtfully provided a list of things they feel that women should be concentrating on

I think you shoukd pick one off the list and get to it while bridge does fuck all but whine about the thread

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/02/2018 15:54

Why is the k so close to the L!!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/02/2018 15:55

Oh sorry re read

Just the one thing then...that should be easy enough
