Fifty shades of grey whinge-fest

Argh. It's that time again when everyone is going on about that bloody film/book and the amazing Mr Grey...

So I'm creating a safe space to moan about it, as I think people I know are a bit sick of hearing my opinion Grin
(And hopefully I won't be alone in my dislike of it here)

Seriously - despite making my thoughts clear on the three previous big occasions (books, first film, second film) I have just had an invite to watch the new film with a group, and I feel crappy for needing to turn it down. Social occasions are hard enough (and rare enough!) for me as it is and I hate the umm... lack of thought that people put into their love of this franchise, kind of indirectly making me feel like I am the one in the wrong.

At the risk of starting to go off topic, it makes me feel so lonely 😕

Utter utter drivel. Clearly written by someone who has led a terrible sex life.

The women I know who go in a big giggling group to watch it let their men have sex once a month and think fluffy handcuffs are the height of kink.

hurtingheart · 10/02/2018 11:42

I also cannot read badly written shit.

Or watch it.

HelenaJustina · 10/02/2018 14:46

This sums up the women I know who have seen the films/plan to see this one, so accurately!

Anlaf · 10/02/2018 16:09

I have not read the books but am able to whinge at length about the first one: Once read over a woman's shoulder on the tube: Christian Grey, CEO of Grey corporation operations LLP GmBH it said or something like that. That's not a fucking real life corporate structure, I thought, fucking unrealistic twaddle.

Anyway, that was awhile ago and I wondered if I should go and see this film so I could really whinge about it - however, this review lays it all out in glorious detail:

www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/02/fifty-shades-freed-a-spoilereview/552887/

Enjoyable extracts;

with the exception of security guards, virtually all subordinates in the Fifty Shades universe are female. I may be missing some small exception somewhere, but perhaps the most consistently clear message of the whole series is that women always work for men and not the reverse.

When Ana wakes up, Christian is back and is angrily morning-drinking. Later on, he will take her to the Red Room and torment her with a vibrator without allowing her sexual release. He explains that this is how he feels when she doesn’t do what he asks. It doesn’t seem like a very apt comparison.

hurtingheart · 11/02/2018 14:25

It bears absolutely no relation to the reality of BDSM and sub/dom relationships. It's vanilla tosh.

humpbackwhalestail · 11/02/2018 14:29

Boatyard, would you not want to read adult books?

That’s honestly not intended snarkily, but all the ones you listed are series for teenagers.

expatinscotland · 11/02/2018 14:33

It's bad even when pissed. It was on when I was with a mate at a lodge in the middle of nowhere. We were pretty trollied but decided to leave it on for a laugh. Nah. We turned over and watched 'Ouija' instead.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/02/2018 15:04

I read about 10 pages and ditched it. It was boring, badly written and tbh I completely disapproved of the theme (but I was curious about all the fuss). But fuck me, nothing was worth reading more of that bilge. Not seen the films either.

MrsJayy · 11/02/2018 15:12

I think it is disgusting abusive and the story is gawd awful I am seen as some sort of freak that I don't find it sexy least when Jamie Dornan is on stuff being interviewed he has an I am very sorry look on his face he has to know how bad it is but is contracted Daykota johnstone doesn't seem to promote it.

MrsJayy · 11/02/2018 15:16

I saw the trailer for the last one in the cinema and vue did special screenings with prosecco on offer for that special valentine night

ememem84 · 11/02/2018 15:16

I read book one. And on Friday saw film 3. Biggest load of tripe ever.

The cinema was full of middle aged ugly women who at the end of the movie were gushing about how they were going to go home and do their men.

My friend and I went because she couldn’t find anyone else to go with and bribed me with dinner and wine and we got told to sssshh at one point.

Scene in mountain house. Woman (Anna?) gets out of bed after a nightmare. Man gets up and wanders into kitchen. He looks in fridge. She’s sat on table eating ice cream. She drops her spoon. Until this point he hasn’t seen her. She asks what he’s doing. “Looking for you” he says closing the fridge.

I thought it funny that he’d look for his wife in the fridge....

CappuccinoCake · 11/02/2018 15:21

I'm quite happy with BDSM but not at all with 50 shades. Most people I'm aware of with any real interest in BDSM slate 50 shades for all the reasons feminists would - consent issues, stalking, relationship abuse and crap sex.

OP:
"I did try to read the first book but gave up after one chapter!"

Then I think YABU. Or at least harsh to comment on it, if you haven't read them.

I like the films. Well actually the films are quite poorly done aswell.

I think the books are poorly written. She did well to make so much money out of them, considering she isn't actually a very good writer.

But I have actually read all the books, so I think I can comment.

I'm going to see the film tonight.

Oblomov18 · 11/02/2018 15:30

Is that true Miri ?
"I just can't watch anything with Jamie Dornan since reading that he prepared for his role in the fall by literally following women IRL and how "exciting" he found it."

Can you link please?

I liked Dornan in The Fall.

PsychedelicSheep · 11/02/2018 15:33

I’m very grateful that none of the women I know would be remotely interested in seeing/reading that old bollocks.

Apparently the author was a Twilight fanfic writer, that’s why there’s so many similarities.

NotAWhacktivist · 12/02/2018 17:55

You might like this review OP. I am just reading it now [slight spoiler alert]:

"the wheels come off in the final 20 minutes, resulting in a kidnapping and car chase and I wanted to smash my own brain in with a hammer.

...the union between Christian and Anastasia is so unbelievably toxic and awful that it becomes an endurance test to sit through."

RadicalFern · 12/02/2018 18:46

Also, let’s not forget that it originated as Twilight fanfiction.

I think it’s the sort of thing that should be hilarious, but so many people seem to take it so seriously and think it’s so sexy, and it just makes me want to laugh (and also cringe).

OlennasWimple · 12/02/2018 19:18

I've read two books and seen the first two films. Like a pp upthread, I like watching / reading dross when stressed

It's utterly ridiculous, badly written tosh, but well done to the author for making so much money out of it

hipsterfun · 12/02/2018 20:07
