I feel this is worth a read for any feminist in the current environment:

I agree re: no reasoning with misogyny. I also think that's why keeping the wider societal and political debate reasonable is the best way to shine a light on it.

I agree. But MPs and the public are.

I think it's important to remain courteous. But it's also important to insist on using language and concepts that reflect (our) reality and to call out arguments that are unreasonable and behaviours that are abusive.

We've been pussyfooting around this for years now (with honourable exceptions) and the result is that we're seeing women's protections and basic child safeguarding practices going up in smoke. We don't have time to establish a common language before we can start pointing out how wrong things are going.

ReappearingWoman · 05/02/2018 16:22

I think Women's place are doing that at the moment - in the face of attempts to discredit them - and i think if they can hold that line there might be progress. I'm not so sure that all MPs are behind having open respectful debate though - they are all so far avoiding this like the plague & are clearly cowed by the threats to their positions, should the transphobic slurs fly.

I don't see how any respectful open discussions can be had with that looming large. Women's place are certainly trying to get this in the open and yet every meeting is having to be kept secret because of the threats to businesses & venues.

How can anyone move on this when even debate is being actively shut down like this? No political party have had or intend having anything like an open debate & make policy decisions on this without consultation. People's jobs threatened. Doxxing. It's all madness & if a debate could actually go ahead that would be great - in these circumstances I've no idea how that happens with these types of tactics employed before talking even takes place.

I still have a lot of respect for her sticking her head above the parapet

Absolutely. She was putting up a good fight on twitter as well Star

I agree with all of the above. I think what MPs feel they can see is different to what they feel they can say at the moment. I think that can be shifted. I think some of it is shifting. I also think some of them are probably where I was a few months ago but can't see it yet.

But should be and, sorry. And can't see it yet.
