Ive had a coil fitted 11 days ago now. Not long having it fitted i had spots of blood, exactly what the doctor told me.
I now have a heavy period! I wasnt expecting this at all.
Is this normal?
Thank you.

The Mirena can cause heavy periods, but if they are also irregular & too frequent they can make you anemic. So keep an eye on the duration, and how many sanpro you use and how often you need to change.
If you are at all concerned, phone your GP or 111 for advice.

Hi, Think it's pretty normal. I had spotting for about 6 weeks after having one put in, then it suddenly stopped. You get really fed up and then suddenly nothing. Complete life changer Smile

Thank you.

Can be totally normal. What we’re your period like before? Mirena acts by thinning the lining of the womb (the endometrium) so initially what has built up needs to be shed, hence the bleeding. This is often irregular in terms of heaviness and pattern of bleeding. Around 70% women stop having periods by 6 months. If you’re having bleeding that is heavier than usual or very painful it would be sensible to speak to whoever fitted it for you. The risk of expulsion is highest in the first 6 weeks so it’s worth checking it’s in place after any heavy bleed. Hope that helps (I’m a GP).

My period was like normal really.
Will it be ok to have unprotected sex once the bleeding stops?
Thank you for your advice.

Hormones settling can cause bleeding for s bit

As long as it’s in you should be fine. To check you need to put a finger in your vagina, like putting a tampon in and find your cervix (feels a bit lie the end of your nose). If you can feel the threads then it’s there and you should be fine.

I think your figures on 70% of women becoming amenorhoeic within 6 months are very misleading. Whilst bleeding settles after the first six months, only 20% of women will stop having periods after 1 year. IIRC, the 70% refers to a time period covering two Mirena IUCDs, according to the Mirena website.
