Val is an Australian writer. I think she starts to nail down some very good points here.

  • older feminists are not the problem
  • younger feminists are not the problem
  • PATRIARCHY IS THE GODDAMN PROBLEM.

This article put into words something I have felt for a long time:

sexual freedom has become another realm of women’s experience for patriarchy to conquer. As soon as older feminists had won sexual liberation, patriarchy reframed it as sexual availability for men

Sexual liberation for women opened up the Pandora's Box of male sexuality. Now we are pressured to submit to all the depraved things that pour out. All while the double standard of slut v stud still applies!

Yes, for me too Practically.

Wonderful piece. And gives Dr Greer's statements (somewhat startling) the historical perspective within which they should be understood. The Australian context is probably significant as well - in the 1950s to 70s, it was very much what was called a "wowser" ethos with a solid foundation in chauvinism and patriarchy.

Good for Vanessa!

The patriarchal backlash is already mobilising its lawyers, and defenders. The fight ahead wants unity, not a failure to either remember women’s past, or apply imagination to their present.

Indeed. Brilliant article. Depressingly expected comments. Men saying the whole 'men need a written contract to have sex these days!' crap Hmm
