No 'grid girls' from 2018 - F1

Liberty, that took over F1 a year or two ago, have decided that they don't fit in with their vision of the sport.

Men are on F1 forums saying they should ask the women, and that it is anti-feminist as it is reducing women's wages.

I don't venture on here often, but I'm interested in your thoughts on this.

I could honestly bang my head against the wall at the responses to this on social media some people really just don't get it .

"It's their choice what's the harm "

Oh I don't know maybe it would be nice if our daughters saw women driving the cars , building and maintaining them rather than simply standing next to them in skimpy Lycra .

God it's frustrating

gluteustothemaximus · 02/02/2018 18:21

I feel the same clumsy.

My main points of frustration are:

‘Well done feminists, bullying young women, dictating what jobs they can and can’t do, the complete opposite of feminism’

Like they know about feminism. Only what they’ve read in the sun or daily mail mind.

No one is bullying these girls. No one has campaigned for their job losses.

‘Feminists complaining there aren’t enough women in sport, well give yourselves a pat on the back because now there are even less women in sport!’

Yes, really. When I think of women in sport, I think of the woman actually participating in the actual sport.

‘You’ll be sorry if men take over these girl’s jobs and shout “inequality” that females no longer allowed’

Oh dear. Really not true. Would however, love to see men do that job, applauding the drivers, holding the umbrellas, smiling. See how they get on.

There’s a shit load more where they came from.

No one is seeing the bigger picture.

Oh, and we’re all ugly BTW Hmm

thenightsky · 02/02/2018 18:26

Oh Glut and Clumsy I agree, it is so very tiring. I'm on the verge of leaving FB, but I think they'd just applaud themselves that they'd won and I had run away. Sad

mummybear701 · 02/02/2018 18:28

I welcome it. Now looking forward to seeing women actually in the cars racing. Even one who can challenge the top men would be progress.

gluteustothemaximus · 02/02/2018 18:55

My latest debate has now turned to feminists not really wanting women in sport because female football is so very poorly attended, they should be out supporting them and paying to watch women play football, but we don’t.

Thing is, I love that women play football now, but I don’t like football. I hate it. I don’t watch men. I don’t watch women.

Interestingly enough though, why aren’t the thousands of male football fans going along to female games? They love football, right? So why aren’t the stadiums full of football fans?

Therein lies the sexism.

But still they want to blame feminists for not supporting their sisters Hmm

gluteustothemaximus · 02/02/2018 18:59

I just asked this man if he goes to support female football matches.

His answer: no, because I’m not a feminist.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Couldn’t. Make. This. Up.

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/02/2018 19:06

He's a poorly researched fool. Attendances at women's football have been rapidly increasing and the top women's league now has attendance similar to League Two (actually the 4th tier) of men's football. The FA cup has seen attendances rise from about 5000 in 2013 to over 35000 in 2017. He couldn't be more wrong!

thenightsky · 02/02/2018 19:06

It really is hopeless.

whoputthecatout · 02/02/2018 19:53

Here's the thing. All these firms that sponsor the grid girls...if they really wanted their brand to get publicity, why not talent search among the young women now starting to come up through the lower grades and who cannot get into the F3, F2, etc. because of lack of backing and sponsorship money. They'd get a hell of a lot more brand coverage if they were to sponsor a woman, eventually in F1 if she were good enough, than by letting a few leggy beauties wave placards and do fuzzy talk with fans.

OnTheList · 02/02/2018 19:58

I am in awe at the amount of men who are kicking off about the loss of these womens earning potential. I never knew so many men were feminists Grin I do hope they remain concerned about the rights of women in the future. But I suspect they will disappear, then resurface in the future once scantily clad eyecandy being removed is blamed on feminists once more.

Also interesting to note that near all the men kicking off about how 'un-feminist' it is to remove these poor womens choices, are at the same time accusing all feminists of being ugly and fat and hairy and campaigning to get these girls sacked as they are jealous. Bravo, lads. Your misogyny is showing.

gluteustothemaximus · 02/02/2018 20:07

Bravo, lads. Your misogyny is showing.

Exactly!

kalapattar · 02/02/2018 20:28

It's annoyed Piers Morgan, the Sun and Katie Hopkins so it's got to be a positive move.

clumsyduck · 02/02/2018 21:10

thenight yep tiring springs to mind :(

glute yup that's all I saw to ! What do feminists actually want ? Look what they've done now the bullies ! And of course yes we're all frigid and ugly and jealous if we dare say anything . I saw one where a woman had commented saying " what's the problem , me and my husband watch it and rate which girls are best it's a laugh !!" Ahh the "cool" wife routine in the face of "well boys will be boys so what else can I do " attitude
Give me strength please Sad

Jamiek80 · 02/02/2018 22:18

While I can see the sexist element it will be interesting to see if the men that replace the grid girls are paid the same?

OvaHere · 02/02/2018 22:34

All these men frothing about women losing their jobs.

Presumably if instead of getting rid of these roles they had instead expanded the opportunity to under represented women in this field - women over 40, plus size women, disabled women, they would all think it was fantastic that so many more women had been offered earning potential.

Because it's not about objectification at all. Right?

PiffIeandWiffle · 02/02/2018 22:44

Hopefully it'll get other women to think about how they represent themselves in public.

I'm fed up with seeing skimpily clad women parading around the town centre in the evenings. They're not only letting themselves down, they're setting a bad example for our daughters....

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/02/2018 22:47

It's not about shaming women for what they're wearing.

PiffIeandWiffle · 02/02/2018 23:01

But it is about how what those women are wearing and what they're doing impacts on the general perception of women by others....

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/02/2018 00:19

What is? Do you mean the "grid girls" or women who you've seen around who's clothing you disapprove of?

gluteustothemaximus · 03/02/2018 00:59

The darts walk on girls have said the following:

That they never felt objectified.

In the same breath, it gave them a confidence boost.

“Literally, all we do is escort the players to the oche, stand for a couple of minutes, smile, and then walk off.“

And in the same article:

“These girls are very professional. It's a difficult thing to do, and only a very limited number of people could do it."

Then a tweet from a man:

“Something died in our amazing sport last night, Taking the Walk On Girls Away is so Wrong and I think most people on here think the Same, sadly like many others I know I will not be watching Itv4 this Weekend“

So women aren’t objectified, but they get a confidence boost, the job is so innocent and easy, but at the same time extremely difficult to do, and even though their role is hardly anything, something has died in the sport, and people who love the sport, won’t be watching.

Hmm
PiffIeandWiffle · 03/02/2018 10:14

What is? Do you mean the "grid girls" or women who you've seen around who's clothing you disapprove of?

Both are dressed pretty much the same, one set do it in a safe, controlled environment and are savvy enough to get paid for it. One set do it in an uncontrolled, drunken environment.

Both sets do it because they believe that they have "assets" that they enjoy highlighting...

One set are in the wrong & a tool of the patriarchy, the other set are expressing themselves & it's their right.

If Grid Girls or Dolly Birds aren't acceptable on our screens, not sure why they should be acceptable in our town centres....

deydododatdodontdeydo · 03/02/2018 10:48

It's about time and I welcome it.
However, my social media is full of posts from "grid girls" complaining that "feminists" have spoiled things for them.
Even in the comments sections, there are so many women against it.
Men against it, I can expect, but women?

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/02/2018 10:48

It's not about what the "grid girls" wear, they wear different things depending on the country the race is in. The point is that they are only there for decoration. They are being used as decorative objects for the delight of the (male) audience, drivers and other leaders of the sport. It shows women at these events to be silent, passive and decorative, irrelevant to the actual activities that are going on. That's the issue with it.

What women (and men) choose to wear on a night out is entirely up to them.

kalapattar · 03/02/2018 11:08

If Grid Girls or Dolly Birds aren't acceptable on our screens, not sure why they should be acceptable in our town centres

Can you explain why F1 sports needs to have grid girls?

Women can wear what they want. But when a business decides to use attractive women as decoration for a sport / to get men to come to their stands in booths, then things become an issue.

marioncole · 03/02/2018 11:19

I've just had someone on FB tell me "if you want to pick a topic to jump on a high horse about, then I would suggest the sexual objectification of six year old girls."

There worst part is that I just can't face the debate. Argue with an idiot and they just bring you down to their level and beat you with experience (plagiarising there, can't remember where I've stolen it from).
