It's quite a long read, but worth it! Kay Green really gets to the heart of how different people are feeling. I particularly like the bit at the end, mocking the general incompetence and uselessness of our politicians, who write gung ho laws with unintended consequences.

yes it's a good one

This is written by a transman, compiles history of trans theory. I have to read it more carefully to be prepared to counter the whole notion that we are entering an era of transition and therefore all is trans/trans is all.

The Boston Review piece lost me at 'white feminists'... It is very queer theory oriented. Butler gives me a headache.

I have got as far as the term ‘trans*’ making trans people the authors of their own destinies- which seems ironic since the term cisgender is imposed on those not identifying as trans by the author (I am talking about the Boston Review piece)

EmyRoo · 24/01/2018 13:04

Sorry, authors of their own categorisations, not destinies

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 13:16

Butler's lifetime ambition seems to be to discover how many words she can use in a sentence while conveying absolutely no meaning whatsoever.

Really? I thought it was to make my brain ooze out of my ears.

She won an obfuscation award once I think.

Have you ever encountered a devoted Butler fan? It's a trip when they try to convince you that the fact that they find it difficult and frustrating to figure out what the hell she's trying to say means that she's brilliant and they're just not smart enough to understand her without a struggle.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/01/2018 13:25

Oh God yes. Most of them claim to understand her though. Plus I love reading articles with casual and throwaway citations of her work.

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 13:29

The sad part is that if you see her speak on Israel for example she's perfectly capable of communicating clearly, she just chooses not to.

likesbulbsandlamps · 24/01/2018 13:35

Yeah it gave me a headache too, I had to have a nap. It didn't help much, I still feel pissed off by not being able to get my head around this, I know that at some point my feminism will be challenged and I'll be called an ignorant old hag.
I'm trying to ready myself to see my neice who has proudly sprouted a moustache, dresses as a dudebro and is being humoured by everyone except her very unhappy 5 year old daughter.
It makes me so angry

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/01/2018 13:36

I haven't read her stuff on Judaism or heard her speak on it. I have heard her speak on 'feminism' but didn't find her at all inspiring.

Oh Lordy. Poor child.

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 13:38

It's really not fair to inflict that sort of doublethink on a 5 year old.
