How should I pronounce 'patriarchy'?

Is it said pat-ri-archy
Or pay-tri-archy?

And are they pat-ri-archal assumptions or pay-tri-archal?
Obviously in an ideal world I would have no need for these words, but in the meantime I've got kids who think that the BBC pay row was in the past because this stuff couldn't be happening now!

I say pay. Don’t know if that’s right or not though...

IndominusRex · 12/01/2018 14:26

Pay-tri-arky

InfiniteSheldon · 12/01/2018 14:26

say fuckers instead Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/01/2018 14:27

I say "pay" too, but I think they are both correct?

redexpat · 12/01/2018 14:30

I say pay.

How did it come up? Were you making plans to smash it? Smile

Fink · 12/01/2018 14:34

If you're speaking English, pay
If you're speaking Latin or Greek, pa [same vowel sound as in rat]. Grin

Love51 · 12/01/2018 14:39

Yes I am making smashing plans :)
DD 6 came home from school having had an assembly about 'Emily' Pankhurst and remembered having seen suffragettes on Horrible Histories. They think that things aren't like that anymore, so I'm trying to explain the gender pay gap. Badly.
Considering asking her to note how much time boys are listened to over girls in her class but maybe that's a bit mean!

Thank you. Strongly towards pay (as we don't tend to chat in Latin or Greek - bet you can't prove the Latin one though!)

I thought it was patriarchy/patriot in English
Paytriarchy/Paytriot in American?

ILookedintheWater · 12/01/2018 14:51

Just checked Chambers.
Patriarchy has a short Pat.
Patriarch, Matriarch.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/01/2018 16:20

I'm a Pat woman. Like pro patria mori type stylee.

MikeUniformMike · 12/01/2018 16:24

pay-tree-arky

Branleuse · 12/01/2018 16:25

Pay-Tree-Arky

PaperdollCartoon · 12/01/2018 16:27

I generally say ‘pa’ but they’re both correct. I have a sociology degree and have heard this word said out loud soooo many times both ways.

Glitterypinksoap · 12/01/2018 16:50

If you want to see subconsciously internalised gender roles in action, watch a year one or reception class lining up. I've never talked to the children about it, but the majority of the children who walk to the front of the line and push in, or scuffle over being first, are boys, and the majority of the children who just move aside and give up their place to pushers in without protest are girls. Even more interestingly, adults rarely notice or challenge this unless the scuffle gets too obvious. I never used to notice either until I started to think about gender stereotyping and looked for it.

Stopmakingsense · 12/01/2018 17:24

That BBC programme in the summer about gender stereotyping in primary school said it all (not available on iplayer)

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/01/2018 20:28

@Glitterypinksoap I watched my DD stop a boy pushing in today. She did shove a little but I didn't stop her. There was a revolution in kindergarten as the boys were hogging the LEGO so much and the girls complained and got a 'girls only' LEGO time.

It's Hunger Games in there!

Glitterypinksoap · 12/01/2018 20:51

Mrs that's really nice to hear! Hunger Games is so accurate... Grin
