Caught on tape slagging off Carrie Gracie and the BBC equal pay row: www.theguardian.com/media/2018/jan/12/john-humphrys-jokes-about-bbc-gender-pay-gap-in-leaked-off-air-recording

After his disgraceful attitude about the Weinstein/#metoo affair on the live Today programme with Michael Gove a few weeks ago, this dinosaur needs to be kicked into touch.

Despite his grandee status, I’ve started to find his dismissive, hectoring interview style is getting in the way of reporting the news.

What an arse!

Yes, he really does need to go. I'm sick of his dinosaur like misogyny. He is frequently appalling and embarrassing to listen to. Is there not a petition? If not someone should start one

SealSong · 12/01/2018 22:48

On the other hand - Eddie Mair, love him. He was awesome today on pm re the whole BBC gender pay issue.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 12/01/2018 22:50

I'd sign

Viviennemary · 12/01/2018 22:55

I've not noticed him lately. It's getting a bit of a witch hunt IMHO.

Whizziwig · 12/01/2018 22:56

Awful. Surely the BBC can't defend him. I also thought Eddie Mair was good today. Managed to sound very objective, which Humphries never does any more. You can clearly tell from his interviews where his political allegiances lie, which shouldn't be the case with broadcasters. There was a very annoying (male) interviewee on PM though who seemed to suggest that Humphries was just joking about and we shouldn't take him too seriously Angry.

Whowhatwhy · 12/01/2018 23:03

Humphreys has a one size fits all approach when interviewing. He attacks the politician and the charity worker with the same tone and aggression. Too much talking, never enough listening. Don't like him at all.

nauticant · 12/01/2018 23:08

Eddie Mair on PM today referring to Trump:

Oval orifice

Often terrific, often very amusing.

alltherageattheBBC · 12/01/2018 23:28

That was Phil Harding whizziwig, former BBC senior manager. Current snooze fest and Humphrys apologist.

PricklyBall · 12/01/2018 23:36

If you haven't noticed him much recently, Vivienne, and he's really that forgettable, it does make one wonder why he got paid in excess of £600,000 last year.

KiaOraAura · 12/01/2018 23:37

whowhatwhy that is so true. A friend of mine, a nurse, had done some research and implemented some fantastic changes to practice as a result. Changes that will make a real difference to people's lives. He interviewed her on R4 and was just horrible, rude and abrupt. Verging on aggressive even. Awful man, hope he gets the boot, but don't think for a second he will. And we bloody pay for misogynistic twats like him.

alltherageattheBBC · 12/01/2018 23:48

Do it! I'll sign.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 12/01/2018 23:50

petition.parliament.uk

Just leaving this here for someone to pick up. Don't want to out myself.

Viviennemary · 12/01/2018 23:55

Lots of them are overpaid and total pains. Why pick on one. The whole BBC money for old rope needs to stop. Let the lot of them go. I only like Andrew Neil. He should stay.

Tatapie · 13/01/2018 00:02

Couldn't agree more with these comments- he's cringeworthy at the best of times, and these are not his best of times. He needs to go.

Tatapie · 13/01/2018 00:06

I really like Paddy O Connell

Modestine · 13/01/2018 00:13

There's a link to the BBC Complaints on this thread - easy to do:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3137478-I-work-at-the-BBC-and-I-have-the-rage

hipsterfun · 13/01/2018 00:46

I ought to care about this more than I do, but I can’t get excited about the overpaid squabbling over who gets overpaid more.

Poor families being moved out of poverty is higher on my wish list than more resources being directed towards the already relatively wealthy, in the name of fairness.

Modestine · 13/01/2018 00:56

It's a question of supporting women like Carrie Gracey, Winifred Robinson, Jane Garvey and others who have put their necks on the line in the name of equality. They are being bullied and sneered at by male colleagues. This is happening right now, and taking one minute to tick a box on the BBC website will make a big difference to their campaign and will send a really strong message in support of women who fight for equality and against men who fight to ridicule them.

We really shouldn't stand by and do nothing.

Modestine · 13/01/2018 01:00

www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/complain-online/

Just quickly tick the boxes - you are complaining about bias in reporting gender inequality in pay - ignore all the guff, get it done. Easy-peasy.

Hopefully it's a stone in a big pond, starting ripples. Helps that it's big news today, involving news reporters.

CritEqual · 13/01/2018 04:35

hipsterfun I tend to agree with you. I favour a much more bottom up vs top down approach to tackling inequality. As what will happen is that once the great and the good have things roughly measured up equally that then becomes part of the narrative that things are fixed and we don't need to bother anymore.

TheLuminaries · 13/01/2018 08:50

Complaint submitted- I complained about Humphreys and the obvious BBC bias in the reporting of this story. I also suggested the overpaid white male talent should be retired and replaced with a new and diverse line up and a pay cap of £150k.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 13/01/2018 08:57

I've complained on much the same lines.

LangCleg · 13/01/2018 09:04

R4 Today seems to trend almost every morning on Twitter, with everybody moaning about Humphreys. I also think he should go.

Butteredparsn1ps · 13/01/2018 09:43

I've complained. For me what also stands out is that JH felt comfortable expressing those opinions - even if they were intended to be shared. If his off air remarks had been racist he would have been sacked by now.

This should be no different.
