Does anyone know why men and women have separate chess tournaments? It’s not a physical game so seems odd.... I googled it but just found MRA stuff saying that men are better at chess?

Chess isnt segregated. There are separate tournaments for women, but women can compete against men in the standard tournaments. Women's tournaments were set up to encourage more women to play chess at a higher level, as they are outnumbered by male players.

My kids play primary level chess. It's done to encourage girls/women. The boys and girls do compete against each other. But every tournament will have an extra best girl prize after first, second, third.

Women and girls aren't able to focus solely on their game like men and boys can because everyone knows females exist to run around cleaning up the shit of little princes.

It's the male potential that gets special treatment and is protected.

Women have to abandon their careers because men won't abandon their own for women and carry the burden women carry for them.

So women choose not to compete with men?

carrotandcornsoup · 28/12/2017 19:44

Ah, so they could compete against men if they wanted?

I hope Anna Muzychuk’s decision not to play makes an impact.

Greenshoots1 · 28/12/2017 20:27

I like the most powerful piece on the board being the female..

IrkThePurist · 28/12/2017 22:57

Women do compete against men. They also compete in women only tournaments.

Didn't Kasparov have to eat his words about one of the Polgar sisters when he said 'she's just a woman' and so she went and beat him?

deydododatdodontdeydo · 28/12/2017 23:28

Judit Polgar has beaten Kasparov and plenty of other male champions.
I'm not sure which incident you're referring to though, Cunning.
There was a controversial match where she didn't challenge him over a touch move incident, then later spoke about it publicly.
He later said a girl of her age (she was 17) should learn manners.
But she lost that match.
I used to follow chess and the Polgars quite a bit.

CunningOperative · 29/12/2017 18:26

Oops, deydododatdodontdeydo I'm not actually sure what I'm referring to.
My grandfather was a chess player and used to teach the girls when they were little, so obviously followed their careers. I just have this memory of my family talking about it at dinner and that it was a really big deal. Sorry Blush

Because chess tends to be male-dominated I believe it's to encourage more women to take part and so the top female players can get some recognition without their names being lost amongst all the top male players?

At club level and casual tournaments gender doesn't matter.
