He's at it again.
www.theguardian.com/film/2017/dec/18/matt-damon-sexual-harassment-weinstein-response-minnie-driver

He's saying that one thing not talked about is men who are not predators. Well Confused Confused Confused

Substitute 'mugger' or 'burglar' for predators. Would we talk about men who are not muggers or burglars? No, because the default assumption is that the vast majority aren't. But apparently NAMALT needs a special category. What does that say about men...?

Matt: when you are in a hole, stop digging mate.

My word, doesn't he have an agent to tell him to shut it?

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 19/12/2017 18:23

It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s some sort of defence ploy for anything which may turn up in the future but considering he has said stupid stuff in the past, his reps are probably YES people.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 19/12/2017 18:24

Or they just hate him.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/12/2017 18:24

His mum seems sensible. Hopefully he goes 'home' for Christmas and gets told.

BertramTheWalrus · 19/12/2017 18:45

I think given his friendship/association with Ben Affleck and obvs Weinstein I'd be keeping my head down if I was him.
I think it's pretty obvious what he's doing: he has something to hide and thinks people won't believe who he really is if he has talked enough about this topic before being accused. He just doesn't realise what he's really saying, though. He must be thick as two short planks.

IfNot · 19/12/2017 19:01

Props to Minnie Driver. She's a good egg.

QuentinSummers · 19/12/2017 19:10

Yes please, I think all men on Mumsnet need a special thread where it’s all about us and how great we are for being normal decent humans. It’s really important for us men to be praised and lauded.
GF men do pop up on here to tell us to do just that . Apparently men need this so as not to be shits.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/12/2017 19:20

It's like the 'friend zone'. Men need to be rewarded for common decency with sex. Obviously.

quencher · 19/12/2017 19:49

This is not the first time for Matt Damon. I used to be a fan who watched any thing with his name in the title, until he decided to damonsplain over a Effie Brown about how black women can be portrayed in films. What he was saying was so important that her voice became irrelevant. That was the last time a watched a Matt Damon movie. Now he has just nailed him self. I guess he will learn now, probably not. It's all about the menz.

CritEqual · 19/12/2017 20:03

Saddned that Ian McKellan made that statement, simplest way to rebutt that nonsense is to point out if a woman was willing to sleep with a doctor to jump the NHS queue for a needed surgery the ethics of the situation are startlingly clear.

Just because a woman throws herself at someone because it's the only way to achieve a career/shelter/food/security is NOT the same as a woman throwing herself at a relative equal out of mutual attraction.

One important light to shine that comes out of Sir Ian's comments is how directors are free to fuck around to their hearts content with historically ZERO hit to their reputation. Yet if ever shit like this ever becomes public about an actress that's her livlihood down the pan. That very fact alone is emblematic of the vice like grip of control women are held in.

badbadhusky · 19/12/2017 20:04

Thanks for tipping me off about Minnie. Her comments were spot on.

I was also disappointed/saddened to see a link on the same page to an article with Peter Jackson saying he blacklisted Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino under pressure from Weinstein. When I think about Judd, she was really in the ascendant in the early 90s, then just disappeared. Same with Sorvino. I have often seen women fade in this way & wondered if it was because other stuff was happening in their lives, they'd gone back to theatre it. It makes me really fucking angry to think their careers were smothered for having the temerity to fight back.

And Matt Damon really, really needs to STFU.

badbadhusky · 19/12/2017 20:04

theatre it = theatre etc.

cuirderussie · 19/12/2017 21:36

I like Minnie Driver. She had a reputation for being "difficult" when she was young but I now realise that just meant "not a simpering doormat".

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/12/2017 21:42

I also now realise how easy it was/is to label an actress as "difficult" and how quickly that spreads and becomes an apparent matter of fact. When in fact their careers were being deliberately sabotaged because they weren't bowing to the whims of these powerful men.

People are really quick to believe the label of "difficult/irrational" when applied to women.

newz2day · 19/12/2017 21:46

Just on Hanks as someone down thread was worried about him. I would be very surprised if he was a jerk.

I recall an interview before the weinstein stuff where he was saying he won't put up with people throwing their weight around set or being rude just because they think they can or have the power, so fingers crossed.

Also I think he came out with comments that were sensible unlike Damon.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/12/2017 21:48

Plenty of male actors are 'difficult' but keep working. 'Difficulty' appears to only be an issue in women. It's a sign of genius in men. Genius is a word rarely applied to female actors or directors.

It does get applied to child rapists and sodomists such as Polanski though.

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/12/2017 21:51

Yes, difficult is definitely seen as a positive in men, and a clear negative in women.

SonicBoomBoom · 19/12/2017 22:14

How very true. Good observation.

To be fair to PJ, he has apologised to the two actresses.

If you're told someone is a 'nightmare' to work with by someone like Weinstein (back in the day), you probably wouldn't really question it.

Jackson and his wife/partner Fran Walsh have both apologised to Ashley and Mira for have any part in inadvertently derailing their careers.

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/12/2017 22:30

And, in fact, it is their apology that actually sheds any light on the matter for AJ and MS.

You would always wonder why offers for parts suddenly dried up. You'd wonder, but never know for sure, and certainly not be able to do a thing about it.

The apology from Jackson and Walsh hopefully lets them know they were imagining it, and perhaps gives them a bit of validation / closure (for want of a better word).

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/12/2017 22:30
  • weren't imagining it!

Matt
Shush now.
