Is there any non misogynistic hiphop?

I love hip hop - the production, the rhythms, the bass, the beats, the tempo etc.
Growing up listening to Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Busta etc definitely influenced me, and not in a good way. I thought my worth was based on pleasing men, often sexually, or boosting their damn egos. I can't pin it totally on the music I listened to, but it had to have played a part.
Now when I hear some of the lyrics I loved when I was 12/13/14, I'm actually disgusted by it.
I don't want to give up listening to hip hop though. Do you think it's possible to have non misogynistic hiphop, or are the two mutually exclusive??
The older I get, the more depressed I am when I look back at my teen years. So many negative influences that are mainstream. Its so damaging!

Have you listened to The Coup? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coup?wprov=sfla1 I love their first three albums, and the others are good too. Also, Boogie Down Productions (BDP/KRS1).

Does Macklemore count as hip hop?

Newtothismumthing1 · 10/12/2017 22:36

Missy Elliot- apart from her, nope!

StigOfThePlump · 10/12/2017 22:39

Try Ugly Duckling 'Journey to Anywhere'.

CrestedTit · 10/12/2017 22:42

Do Rizzle kicks count?

Plonkysaurus · 10/12/2017 22:45

Jurassic5 are more interested in lived experience than misogyny.

marciagetscreamed · 10/12/2017 22:46

Lack of Afro? Jurassic Five?

Not sure they're true hip hop but worth a listen.

StigOfThePlump · 10/12/2017 22:48

I was going to say Jurassic 5 too. Maybe The Roots too.

Not hip hop so much as hip hop inspired, but I check out M.I.A. if you don't already know her stuff.

WeSailTonightForSingapore · 10/12/2017 23:28

There is an "underground" hip hop scene, or used to be called that, thought it's not actually underground iswim.

A lot of alternative and conscious hip hop as well.

Sage Francis.
Aesop
Eyedea and Abilities
Atmosphere
Talib Kwali

A lot of artists associated with Strange Famous records.

It's been a while since I listened to them closely but I don't recall them being mysoginist.

NERD\Pharrell Williams. The beginning of Lemon is actually a quote from Gloria Steinem. Pharrell is very feminist in my opinion.

QuentinSummers · 11/12/2017 18:27

Jurassic 5!

QuentinSummers · 11/12/2017 18:27

Lauryn Hill and TLC

CrestedTit · 11/12/2017 19:54

MermaidUnicorn did you know that Pharrell Williams wrote Blurred Lines?! Such a shame as I really like his music otherwise.

Fekko · 11/12/2017 19:55

Salt n Pepa? God I'm showing my age...

TotemIcePole · 11/12/2017 19:57

NERD stands for No-one Ever Really Dies, I heard once, not sure if its true!

MermaidUnicorn · 11/12/2017 21:37

Aggghh yes Crested, I knew that. I don't think he's in a hurry to do a follow-up!

Jog22 · 12/12/2017 10:42

Disposable Heros of Hiphoprisy
Spearhead
Marxman
MC Solaar
Senser
(Early 90's)

PickingOakum · 12/12/2017 17:00

There used to be.

The Roots, Gangstar, Group Home etc. Some of the best and most beautiful hip hop ever made.

The Roots even did a track with Ursula Rucker.

PeanutButterIsEverything · 13/12/2017 18:53

Have a listen to these guys, definitely not misogynistic and don't really swear either, but great beats. Imperial and Kinetik - this one's about staying in being better than going out.

zippies · 14/12/2017 11:43

I take it you have listened to "Millie pulled a pistol on Santa" by De La Soul.

Based on someone the band knew - they added the ending with the gun but I think it really is just spot on.

How the narrators react to Millie saying she was abused with disbelief due to the charismatic perpetrator.

This is just a fantastic message they manage to highlight and get to the truth of abuse without further victimising Millie.

Anyhow love them and tackling this issue in a Christmas song.
