Gender recognition bill

Melony6 · 08/12/2017 04:36

Can someone point me to the official paper on the new proposed bill - rather than a newspaper article . I was discussing it with people who deal with peoples rights and they argued when I said that people can choose their gEnder and are then legally that gender, saying no they must go through reassignment and operation etc.
The actual documents are what I would like to send them a link to., have looked at gov website but didn’t find them.

I'd like to see it also (planning on seeing my GP about this also).

Battleax · 08/12/2017 04:46

It's not a Bill, it's a set of proposed amendments to an existing Act.

here

GP? That should say MP!!!

Battleax · 08/12/2017 04:48

The most important passages are;

"Proposals to streamline and de-medicalise the process for changing gender will be part of a broad consultation of the legal system that underpins gender transition, the Gender Recognition Act.

"Currently individuals need a diagnosis of gender dysphoria and have to provide evidence that they have been in transition for at least two years before they can apply to legally change their gender."

AND

"The consultation on the Gender Recognition Act, to be published in the Autumn, will look to improve the recognition process and reduce the stigma faced by the trans community. Proposals will include:

"Removing the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria before being able to apply for gender recognition. The current need to be assessed and diagnosed by clinicians is seen as an intrusive requirement by the trans community; and
Proposing options for reducing the length and intrusiveness of the gender recognition system."

Raisins Grin

Yes, thanks that is just what I need.
The lack of inclusion in the document of any considerations or concerns resulting from these changes is like a big red flag.

Can I just point out that my DD, biologically female, at age 19 has a passport and driving licence in a new name which say she is male. Her NHS records say she is male. She has no formal diagnosis, has not yet attended a GID clinic, but got a letter from her GP confirming her intention to live in her preferred gender. The only thing which hasn't changed is her birth certificate.
All this done very easily (far too easily Sad) under current legislation.

Stopmakingsense · 08/12/2017 07:32

And not a hint of stigma or difficulty

Widow woman - I am completely supportive of my daughter and we have a very close relationship. It is by far the hardest thing we have faced as a family. She is autistic and very vulnerable.

Copperkettles · 08/12/2017 09:05

stopmaking so will she get letters asking her to go for a smear test once she hits 25? Or does the gp literally consider her male. You've really shocked me

Stopmakingsense · 08/12/2017 09:30

We have talked about this. She knows to refer herself as the GP has pointed this out. But it is really shocking - research statistics into say, mental illness, will record her experiences as male. The passport actually says "Sex: M" Still should boost her chances at job interviews, because clearly no risk of her getting pregnant because she is a literally man Grin.

Stopmakingsense · 08/12/2017 09:30

*literally a man.

Debbie6666 · 08/12/2017 10:07

Just goes to show all the fears over self ID are misplaced as self ID is in all intents and purposes already here and has been for many years.

The GRA proposals are in actual fact very minor only really affecting pensions and the final tidying up of a persons documentation which will likely be filed away never to see the light of day again like 99.999% of the populations birth certificate.

RedToothBrush · 08/12/2017 10:38

It will make a difference. If for no other reason than the propaganda and publicity it will produce and the increasing use of this to silence women by shouting transphobe.

QuarksandLeptons · 08/12/2017 10:43

Great comment on one of the other threads by HistoryKid that’s very relevant to discussions about the hypocrisy of the current GRA and its proposed changes that will make it even worse:

“Why can a man or teenage boy self identify as a woman based on a feeling? The GRA propose to make this law and therefore legislate women out of existence as a class, what better way to discriminate than legislate a group out of existence? If one cannot see sex one cannot see sexism, feminist analysis becomes hate speech. In any other circumstance people have assessments for legal recognition - my mum has to prove that she is disabled, despite being terminally ill and residing in hospital (4 months now). The Conservatives propose a 'rape clause' for child benefit - one must prove conception was through rape. Pregnant women are assessed by a doctor to gain medical notes if they need time off before they are 'showing'. But a boy says he is a woman? Sure! Women have been so dehumanised that we are merely a costume, constructed in pink and make-up”

ArcheryAnnie · 08/12/2017 10:45

Just goes to show all the fears over self ID are misplaced as self ID is in all intents and purposes already here and has been for many years.

And women are already being affected by it.

Stopmakingsense · 08/12/2017 11:40

The difference is huge. When the GRA came into being, there was no same sex marriage so a man could not stay married if he transitioned. In the last 5 years or so, there has been a massive change. Young people are changing gender without changing their sex. Men are quite happily identifying as women whilst sporting a beard. In this scenario we need different legislation. Gender should be (but isn't) irrelevant for almost everything, except where biological sex matters: medicine (screening, treatment); safety of women and children who are at risk of sexual assault because of their biology; discrimination based on sex, etc.
Then in the meantime we can dismantle the hugely damaging stereotypes has led to a situation where it is actually seen as a good thing to chop off body parts and sterilize human beings who don't conform to those stereotypes.

You missed out sport in your list Stopmakingsense.

This is a big loss to women.

Sorry OP but a question for StopMakingSense. If your DC commits a crime, will they then be sent to a male prison? If the NHS has them listed as male then will they get letters for prostate screening (obviously in many years time!!)? If they fall pregnant will that then be listed as a male pregnancy? If they are raped will it be classed as male rape - even if it's vaginal?

This all seems a bit crazy and maybe you don't know, I'm only asking because you have real experience in this rather than theory.

It really sounds like one quick way around this is for passports and NHS records to have gender listed on them as well as sex. Although I can see why that would also cause problems...

Battleax · 09/12/2017 06:55

Sport could be the thing that brings about most peak-trans moments. I'm gritting my teeth for the big ramifications that are coming in sport and athletics in the hope it finally raises public awareness of what's happening.
