Boko Haram and girl suicide bombers

I just read this horrific article
www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/10/25/world/africa/nigeria-boko-haram-suicide-bomb.html
Young girls in Nigeria are kidnapped by Boko Haram and if they don't want to become "wives" aka be raped by the fighters, they get deployed with suicide vests.
People are now scared of young women/girls out in public in case they are bombers. Also in true patriarchal style, public campaigns urge girls not to "allow themselves" to be turned into suicide bombers.
I am so upset and angry about this. I don't understand how humans are so evil towards women and girls Sad
I'm going to find a suitable charity to donate to. Is anyone aware of anything else we can do to help these girls? Sad

That is hideous. Can't stop thinking about them.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/11/2017 12:17

I'm no longer surprised by the appalling things that men do to women and girls, sadly. This is particularly horrific though. If you find a suitable charity will you post the details here?

That is awful on so many levels. Those poor girls.

They do this to kids of both genders, not just Boko but many other islamic groups, it just doesn't get the same coverage in the West. We've all heard about the 300 girls, but how many know about the 10.000 boys that have also been kidnapped?

The Guardian had a couple of great pieces on this a few years ago, one about how boys suffering in war zones gets almost completely overlooked in Western media and another one about how males also get raped in astounding numbers (sometimes even more than females), yet Brangelina and her cronies never seem to give it a second thought.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2017 15:10

The two books I've read on the subject and countless articles were possibly informative, including the BBC's coverage of male rape in war zones. Human Rights Watch and charities dedicated to child soldiers. Oprah is involved. Hardly no coverage.

This is Feminism Chat where we talk about women and girls. Google 'child soldiers' for many resources that prioritize boys and men.

garybuseysdentist · 28/11/2017 15:24

I'm only saying it's not gendered. Unfiltered islam is a incredibly toxic ideology for all involved. And I was talking about the mainstream, not people who look into it like you and I. How many celebs ever mentioned the boys, even though they were about 99% of the victims? When did a frowny faced Michelle ever hold a ''bring our boys'' sign or Brangelina mention them in one of her summits?

Google ''bring back our'' and let me know when the word boys shows up... just letting you know I won't be holding my breath.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2017 15:25

You think rape in war and conflict isn't gendered?

I'm not even going to bother.

garybuseysdentist · 28/11/2017 15:30

www.theguardian.com/society/2011/jul/17/the-rape-of-men

Enjoy.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2017 15:33

I know it happens. I also know it's gendered. If you are interested in combating the rape of men in wars and child soldiers, go do that. If you are just using it to deflect women's energy away from caring about women and girls in war zones; do it somewhere else.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/11/2017 16:07

Seriously why do you have to dump this on an unrelated thread and try and make it all about your chosen issue? Have you got nothing to say about this particular issue, affecting women and girls? Or do you just not give a shit about that, @garybuseysdentist?

QuentinSummers · 28/11/2017 20:41

Flipping idiots. I can't believe what threads men get "whataboutery" on sometimes.
