Thank goodness

Several students said they were concerned about the vote being made public, amid fears that those who voted against it would be seen as “transphobic” and their peers would “judge them”.

I wonder how many young people have concerns like the rest of us but are too afraid to speak out?

IceniLacuna · 27/11/2017 23:21

clicky link

Maryz · 27/11/2017 23:57

But it won't make any difference.

If transwomen are women, they will just use the women's - which is what they actually want, they (mostly) don't seem to want gender neutral any more, their argument has moved on Confused

WindowsNeedCleaning · 27/11/2017 23:59

Notice how it's a) "Gender neutral " and b) "Gender neutral with urinals". I.e. a)Women move over, the men are going to use your loos if we feel like it and b) oh no these are for men.

Ttbb · 28/11/2017 00:01

Just to put my two pence in here:the gender neutral loos at my university are just used for sex most of the time. This, beyond being gross, poses a very obvious safety concern, more so than just so called transwomen in women's loos. It's definitely a good thing that they have been rejected.

Battleax · 28/11/2017 00:03

It's something.

Although I found out today that at least one Oxford College SU uses "women star" as standard terminology. Shades of the Green Party's "non men" there.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 28/11/2017 00:04

What a relief that university students are starting to talk common sense despite the prevailing "you're a bigot" if you dare to challenge the current status quo.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 28/11/2017 00:06

Ttbb please tell us more. Are you a member of staff or a student?

PositivelyPERF · 28/11/2017 00:17

What the hell is ^woman star*?

Battleax · 28/11/2017 00:22

It's essentially women and MTTs and anyone else who feels like a woman at that moment.

I was so taken aback, I asked for the full wording of the written policy, which she was kind enough to look up and read aloud to me, "have 'woman' as at least part of a gender fluid or other identity" was part of it.

Battleax · 28/11/2017 00:23

I suppose it's probably rendered "women*" in practice.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 28/11/2017 02:23

That article makes me a bit mad, the 'gender neutral' rather than unisex and such. The continued conflation of sex and gender throughout, and most especially this lie, that is parrotted all over

In the UK and most countries around the world, children need to wait until they are adults before they can undergo gender reassignment surgery, but they can be prescribed synthetic hormones to suppress puberty. The effects are fully reversible, so treatment can be stopped at any time.

Fully reversible my arse Hmm

I wouldn't say this was especially good news? Unisex facilities are better than female (including male) loos. At least people know what they are getting into. Actually progressive, would be male, female plus unisex. With male and female being for actual male and female people, no mixing because of dress sense and purple hair.

CocoaXx · 28/11/2017 07:02

Yes, my institution has male, female and gender neutral - aside from the fact that on some floors, gender neutral is the former women’s loos, and women have to go to a different floor, this is a reasonable compromise, I think.

Why is it women and not men too? I mean, there are trans men and non- gender conforming women (whatever that means, me on the day I wear trousers?).

Why do people think this is okay?!?

From the Telegraph article :
their request for a public ballot was overruled and the motion was narrowly defeated by 31 votes to 29.

So this was a student council or some such voting? Not all students who would be affected.
