I liked him years ago when I followed the news a lot more closely than I do now. Not read any of his commentary for a very long time. Is there something specific that has happened for #peakowenjones to be trending?? If anyone wouldn't mind filling me in

I think the skinhead comment was very uncalled for regardless of your opinion on him though.

Oh ok maybe the skinhead comment was a bit off but I still think he avoided a major issue with the cultures of violence racism tribalism sexism that exist within some sections of working class society, and there is a theme in some parts of gay sexuality that fetishises skinhead type violence and sex... Which might be uncomfortable or 'problematic' for him to addresss .

The comments about OJ's sex life aren't unprovoked nastiness though. He's fully signed up to defending the concept of the "cotton ceiling."

I think it's that OJ sees fit to lecture lesbians on how they ought to accept penises into their vaginas so as to prove they are not transphobic bigots that makes people lose patience with playing nice with him. Insist on making other people's sexual preferences your business and you might find they feel licensed to make comments about yours. Kind of live by the sword, die by the sword.

LOJ: "No! That's gross! And homophobic! You are telling a gay man that he should be straight, you bigot!"

Separate conversation.
LOJ: "Trans women are women! #nodebate!"
Feminist: "Hey, Owen, lesbians don't do penis, and they get tired of having to justify why they don't want to sleep with penis-owning transwomen. Don't you think that sounds a bit like conversion therapy?"
LOJ: "Those lesbians are bigots. Transwomen are women therefore lesbians who won't sleep with them are literally killing them".

No apparent inkling that the two positions are entirely, wholly contradictory. Owen is same sex attracted and it is bigotry to suggest otherwise. Lesbians ought to be same gender attracted, and it is bigotry to suggest otherwise. The critical factor seems to be who owns the penis, because that's the trump card.

Patriarchy in action, innit. The reactionary authoritarian strain of the left just bloody love it.

As I understand it, it dates back to an article he wrote a couple of years ago in the Guardian about Stonewall and how the LGB need to take more account of the T. The comment about lesbians happened in the BTL comments and, per the Guardian BTL policy, the comments have long since been removed.

Since then, whenever the topic comes up, he stonewalls (SWIDT? ) it and won't generally answer. However, given that his position is that transwomen are women #nodebate, how could he think otherwise? How could anyone who truly believes what they are saying when they repeat (the thought terminating cliché) "Transwomen ARE women" think otherwise? You either believe it to be true, in that there is no difference between a trans woman and a woman, in any way, or you don't.

I personally think that people don't actually believe it. And their behaviour bears this out. He has certainly since said on twitter that it is homophobic for people to talk about him having sex with a trans man.

Thanks for explaining. Much as I dislike the guy, it sounds like he hasn’t actually said lesbians should be willing to sleep with people with penises though, its just been inferred from his views. I just wanted to understand what has been going on. I’m firmly of the view of most people on here, and I think it’s good to use to point to bring up contradictions, but it should be made clear he didn’t actually say that right?
Don’t know why I’m sticking up for him, I’m not tying to wind anyone up! I’ve been reading these threads and find them very informative.
My ten cents worth is that the feminist movement should be more openly supportive of transgender rights as a separate protected group - I know many of you are anyway, but I think in order to be taken seriously the Us vs Them line (taken by the tras ) shouldn’t be used, and we should try to rise above it!

I take your point, though, that we need to be very clear about what people are and aren't saying and that it can be evidenced and documented and not just inferred. That is important. It's hard to take the charitable interpretation for Owen though, because his misogyny is pretty hard to stomach generally. He's kind of a poster boy for all that's gone wrong on the left, which might be a bit unfair to him, but he's kind of hoisted himself by his own petard on this one.

Ah I see. I felt quite positively about him when Chavs came out, but recently I've been finding him very ignorant, and his interview style is just awful (though that's personal, so perhaps unnecessary).
I do think it's really important transgender people remain a separate protected category though. Much as I believe that gender is not innate, I can't deny some people are having a really rough time with their identities, based on societies outdates concepts, and that should always be recognised. Think of if a female to male transgender person made it onto a board - it wouldn't show up as diverse at all if they were just considered a man. I think it goes both ways. Although someone born male applying for the Women in Leadership program is clearly bananas. Why not have a program for LGBT people as well so everyone is included?

I'm kind of glad I started this thread as so many interesting replies, however I now have acid stomach due to being unable to digest OJ's misogynistic doublespeak.

I too have been looking for these, there seems to have been some sort of online shredding.

I do remember catching bits of it at the time and being so incandescent with rage that I can't quote verbatim now.
