I think radio is for men.

Just that really. I work for home and listen to a lot of radio. The female voices are few and far between. I can't claim to listen to every radio station but the ones I do listen to are dominate by men. Men have all the prime spots in the schedule. Women are often reduced to sidekick status or in the case of someone like Emma Willis on Heart who is a very capable presenter, still has to have a male co-host.
6Music really pisses me off, and I know they have Lauren Laverne and Cerys Matthews, who are both excellent, but it is so bloody male. Radcliffe and Maconie barely have any female listeners ringing in and their answer to the teatime theme time quiz yesterday was 'Roy Hodson and the teams he has managed.' FWIW I am a football fan and knew the answer but it's all so unashamedly male in tone.
I know people may disagree and may try to pick holes in my opinion but I am really just letting off steam. It pisses me off that young girls who listen to music on the radio and getting a crappy message that it's not for them.

It is true.

Look at the Radio 2 listings for today.

Chris Evans
Ken Bruce
Jeremy Vine
Steve Wright
Simon Mayo
Mark Radcliffe

Then Jo Whiley at 8pm. When nobody is listening.

The only time you normally hear women presenter voices are when they fill in for the men who are on holiday during the school holidays. Zoe Ball and Fearne Cotton come to mind. So women often get the crappy school holiday slots for a week or two.

Now come on, Radio 4 gives us a whole hour to ourselves, presumably to discuss knitting patterns and fannies and suchlike.

It's the bro culture that makes me gag - Chris Evans, etc, always have to have a coterie of hangers-on, one of whom has a husky sexy voice with which to admire his terrible jokes.

Swizzlesticks23 · 22/11/2017 12:39

😂😂😂😂😂😂 ffs

Elendon · 22/11/2017 12:39

I only listen to Radio 4.

At the moment Martha Kearney is on discussing the budget.

(which reminds me, I must get my bee keepers certificate).

Terrylene · 22/11/2017 13:20

ISIHAC is much improved with Jan Ravens now on as token woman. They need a few more.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 22/11/2017 13:30

Radio 4 and Radio 4 extra are not as bad - it's almost a 40:60 split of women to men there!

R4 · 22/11/2017 13:34

young girls who listen to music on the radio are getting a crappy message that it's not for them.

The yoof (of both sexes) are turning away from radio, including Radio1. They use spotify and the like now.

You need to get over to Radio 4.

NumberEightyOne · 22/11/2017 13:48

I do listen to Radio 4 but one of my great loves is music so I wouldn't want to listen to Radio 4 all day.

I'm a recent convert to 5live. It covers issues pertinent to women very regularly, addresses subjects that men struggle to talk about eg infertility, suicide. There are plenty of female voices and women's sport is well covered. I don't listen on an evening particularly but during the day I like the current affairs, phone in contributions and coverage of issues outside of London and I don't have to listen to that insufferable PITA Jeremy Vine. The test will be in December when I don't have cheesy Christmas songs to accompany my commute Smile

NumberEightyOne · 22/11/2017 16:54

I agree that 5live is OK actually. I suppose it's mainly the music channels.

Annie Mac tho

Hassled · 22/11/2017 20:43

But I don't need to hear a woman's voice to enjoy a radio programme - if it's interesting and engaging I don't really care. I'm undoubtedly a feminist, but that doesn't equate to needing only a woman to tell me things. I don't feel my needs aren't being met when I'm listening to Eddie Mair.

That Radio 2 lineup though - that's pretty shocking. Radio 4 seems far more balanced.

hazeyjane · 22/11/2017 20:51

Radio 6 could do with some more women, Lauren Laverne is great, and they have had some good series with presenters like Brix Smith and Katie Puckrick. Mary Ann Hobbs and Cerys Matthews have me reaching for the off button!

stroganoff · 22/11/2017 21:17

Saturdays are radio 2 and Sunday's are 6 music in this house (5 live is sports saturation at the weekend). Good mix of women presenters and 6 music is really eclectic but my highlight is Guy Garvey and he effuses about his wife and child to make me love the Elbow bear a bit more :-)

headinhands · 22/11/2017 21:54

It’s just an extension of the media. As an aside I used to be exclusively an R4 listener but increasingly listen to LBC. There’s some great presenters. Can’t abide Ferrari or farange.

overnightangel · 22/11/2017 22:05

Another recent convert to Radio 5 Live for reasons stated above.
Rachel Burden, Emma Barnett, Eleanor Oldroyd, Anna Foster all excellent on 5 Live
(As are Nicky Campbell and Tony Livesey)
If in the car during the day it’s always on

NumberEightyOne · 22/11/2017 22:18

I like Guy Garvey too but the 6Music weekday is basically all men with a token Lauren Laverne in the late morning (least good) spot.

I’m listening to something ace on 4extra right now. It’s a comedy drama thing about four generations of women (‘all those women’).

I listen to radio 4 pretty much all day. I don’t think it feels too male in outlook, and there are some excellent female presenters. The comedy panel shows could definitely have more women, and female writers (writing is totally a man’s game) but nothing new there...

QuentinSummers · 22/11/2017 22:33

Yes but only during weekdays. Weekends and evenings (when the men are listening) it is wall to wall sports. Drives me demented. Flipping fighting talk is the worst radio item ever. Laddish banter with bells. Zzz zzz

GreyOwls · 22/11/2017 22:45

Our local BBC station is full of male presenters, so are the commercial stations. 5Live is very male as is CapitalFM and Planet Rock.

Radio 4 & 4 Extra are excellent though and I dont think the other BBC stations are too bad. I never listen to Radio2 so cant comment on that. I do agree though that overall, male presenters feature more prominantly than female presenters (i.e. given the best shows/peak listening slots).

NumberEightyOne · 22/11/2017 23:01

All forms of media are male dominated but radio seems especially bad. It's ridiculous that the BBC are amongst the worst offenders.

Agree on five live, often they will have two women anchors on the breakfast show which is nice.
