Is this a also thinly veiled comment on guardian colleagues who tend to shout women down?!

I heart Hadley Freeman and Sarah Ditum.

Sentimentallentil · 20/11/2017 22:20

Hooraah!

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 20/11/2017 23:25

Now a couple of them have broken ranks I predict more will follow. I think the office just became an uncomfortable place for Owen.

It's such a PITA when the people you've shouted down start answering back innit Owen?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/11/2017 00:10

There’s a tabloid hysteria about what kids shouldn’t wear

No there isn't actually. I thought that was quite a badly written piece. Freeman is also falling in to the "must show my liberal credentials at all time" trap. The Daily Mail did not write a pc gorn mad article on this. It mentioned the idea of drag queens coming into schools- which many of you have been very critical of. The Daily Mail still has the nerve to report that criminals are transgender and is one of the media outlets not buying into all things trans.

Freeman seems to have changed her tune from very pro trans articles she was writing not that long ago.

So far as silencing the media I actually find it quite worrying that an activist group has forced Paperchase to publish a grovelling apology for a promotion being run in the Mail.

Mooncuplanding · 21/11/2017 00:16

I think she shied away from saying that a man cannot become a woman.

yantantethermetherpimp · 21/11/2017 08:39

Mooncuplanding maybe she shied away, but I think part of what makes it a strong article is the focus on a small number of issues. Covering too many angles in one piece can dilute the point you're making.

AshleySilver · 21/11/2017 09:37

Freeman seems to have changed her tune from very pro trans articles she was writing not that long ago.

To me, that is a good thing. She learned more about the issues and re-evaluated her position based on what she learned. Many of us here have been through a similar process.

Copperkettles · 21/11/2017 09:48

She did shy away but I think it was a really good article and I agree with everything she's saying. Really heartened to read it.

HeyRoly · 21/11/2017 09:53

Also, she's not stupid. Her Twitter mentions have already blown up with people accusing her of bigotry, transphobia, blah blah (my favourite was a man who said "Transwomen are women. Full stop" Hmm). If she actually said "a man cannot become a woman" then she would probably be fearing for her safety and that of her family.

Sentimentallentil · 21/11/2017 09:54

I think it was good she didn’t say that trans women aren’t women, if she had the article would have been dismissed and lost under screams of ‘twansphobia’.

BeyondAssignation · 21/11/2017 10:08

Yep, laying out dots is good for readers to join them themselves :)

IndominusRex · 21/11/2017 13:38

The comments are so good.

drspouse · 21/11/2017 13:57

I just saw it and thought it was great.
She didn't explicitly say a man cannot become a woman but she says sex is not gender and that men (i.e. trans women) shouldn't be in women's spaces.
Off to follow her on Twitter.

Ekphrasis · 21/11/2017 14:21

She’s not keen on the lily m thing and there’s a lot of arguing under her comment.

Thank you Hadley

Paperweightmover · 21/11/2017 22:08

Yes, thank you Hadley. I wish I could be as eloquent .

SleightOfMind · 21/11/2017 22:27

She’s growing into her role at last. This was good.

tiktok · 21/11/2017 22:36

Very pleased to see this. It's clear and even amusing in parts :)

badbadhusky · 21/11/2017 22:58

Great article Hadley!

I also ❤️ Hadley’s Twitter profile pic - recently introduced my boys to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off & it stands up pretty well after all these years. Grin
