Child abuse / prostitution in Glasgow - Times investigation

norahnamechange · 17/11/2017 07:38

The Times has published a shocking investigation into systematic abuse / prostitution of children in the Govan area of Glasgow.
Children, some as young as 5 / 6 , are being openly sold on the streets. They come from one particular group (the Roma community) and just as with Rotherham and other towns where we had systematic organised abuse, there appears to be the same lack of effective response from the Police / social services for fear of appearing racist / targeting a particular community?
I can't cut and paste but here's a link to one of their articles (behind a paywall):

Utterly appalling

That's the thing. Poor people don't pimp out their children.

ChesterBelloc · 17/11/2017 15:09

I think I'd prefer to say that poverty doesn't cause people to pimp out their children. Neither would poverty justify it. Ever.

I would assume that the parents are not in a position to choose whether they pimp out their children or not, that someone else is making this decision for them, and that they do not have the wherewithall to get out of this position.

Nonibaloni · 17/11/2017 15:26

This makes me so angry. Because we have a (chronically underfunded) police force. We have a (chronically underfunded) justice system.
Funnily enough putting hundreds of absused children through the systems is the attention the government wants. And I mean both Scottish and uk government.
To get to the point that turning down an offer of sex form money from a traffic child goes hand in hand with getting a kebab and the night bus.
And I don’t believe he pc bullshit one bit.

FloraFox · 17/11/2017 15:32

I would assume that the parents are not in a position to choose whether they pimp out their children or not, that someone else is making this decision for them, and that they do not have the wherewithall to get out of this position.

I think this is an overly generous assumption and it doesn’t help the children to make it.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 17/11/2017 15:34

How can this be happening? It's awful enough that there are child prostitution rings, but I can understand how difficult it must be to fight that - having children blatantly soliciting on the streets is something that can and ought to be prevented. What the hell is being prioritised over this?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/11/2017 15:34

Everybody is in the position not to pimp put their children.

Even stealing is a better option

Terrylene · 17/11/2017 15:40

I'm not making any excuses for them. The parents have probably grown up with this and cannot envision anything else, a way out of it, or that it is possible. I don't think we should be condoning any of it . We have child protection and other laws in place. They need to be used.

Beingrippedoff · 17/11/2017 16:00

This is a horrendous story and the fact that it’s been known about for at least 10 years and still ongoing is truly shocking. Why do so many institutions turn a blind eye to child sex abuse?

AssassinatedBeauty · 17/11/2017 16:16

The assumption has to be that the local social services are underfunded and understaffed and so can't begin to address these issues. Combined with perhaps a high degree of travelling families where they can just disappear with no notice.

Will this report in the Times actually lead to any proper action being taken? And an analysis of why this situation has developed in the first place?

Mxyzptlk · 17/11/2017 16:28

Remember the Romanian orphans? Sadly neglected little children in crowded orphanages.
Maybe some of them are now emotionally damaged adults with no idea of how to parent their own children?

I'm not making excuses but this could be a reason for some of the abuse.

www.theguardian.com/news/2014/dec/10/-sp-ceausescus-children

There is no possible good reason for the way it has all been covered up by police and social services, though.

Terrylene · 17/11/2017 16:37

No, Roma are a cultural itinerant group, not the same as Romanians. These people just happen to have immigrated from Romania and Slovakia.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/11/2017 16:39

The children in the orphanages were not necessarily all Roma.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 17/11/2017 16:57

What action should we (as a country) take. Should we deport all EU nationals who cant prove that they are gainfully employed productive members of society and make it harder for people to enter the country without a visa and formal provable job offer. That would be the option that old bitter left behind UKIP types who cant accept that progress looks a lot like the 19th century would favour.
Spend literally generations and millions on targeted educational and social care initiatives in the hope that the Roma might stop prostituting their children, begging and stealing.
Take large numbers of children away from their family's and put them into the care system and rehome them with decent families. Like the Australians did with aboriginal children until 1970. Although will there spaces in a care and fostering system already over stretched with "child" refugee's.
Continue as we are at present arresting individual paedophile's and pimps and intervening in cases that come to light on an adhoc basis and hope the problem goes away.

PhilODox · 17/11/2017 17:10

Why do so many institutions turn a blind eye to child sex abuse?
Because only the powerless and vulnerable are abused, perhaps? How are they going to complain?

Roma often marry at 13/14, and start families straight away- people that young don't necessarily make the best decisions.

I'm sure there are a number of men that impregnate their current pimpees, in order to replace them once they've passed their usefulness.

PhilODox · 17/11/2017 17:13

Take large numbers of children away from their family's and put them into the care system and rehome them with decent families

That's what the Romanians have begun to do, lessworried, ...hence Roma leaving Romania Hmm

lessworriedaboutthecat · 17/11/2017 17:18

Like the stolen generation or Britain's Child Migrant programme.

Nonibaloni · 17/11/2017 17:20

Obviously there isn’t a magic bullet but that isn’t to say ignore it all. I am no fan of sex work becoming mainstream but perhaps legalising and licensing ADULT prostitution and levelling the biggest sentences on people not using those services. And 100% reporting a investigating. Although where the money comes from I don’t know.

Personwithhorse · 17/11/2017 17:31

Why have they been allowed into the UK? I assume they get welfare and social housing (that should only be available to locals), do the children go to school or are they just the possessions of the males? Time to dump all this political correct nonsense and Deal with child abuse.

AssassinatedBeauty · 17/11/2017 17:38

What actions would you take Person?

Backingvocals · 17/11/2017 17:45

No welfare or housing round here person. That's why they are living rough on the steps of our local school and building shanty towns on Park Lane.

I suspect though that the trafficked element means that even if they were eligible, the men wouldn't want them in homes and schools.

PhilODox · 17/11/2017 17:54

Person- presumably they can come to UK because they have Romanian passports?

RebelRogue · 17/11/2017 18:13

Why would parents sell their kids to the highest bidders?

Lack of jobs, education and no contraception means they end up with a lot of kids to feed.

Debts to loan sharks.

Empty promises of jobs for the girls or being looked after.

Kidnapping.

FloraFox · 17/11/2017 18:27

Many people have these problems (except kidnaping which doesn’t seem to be the case here) and don’t pimp their kids.
