Posted the following on the normal chat board but I was wondering how the discussion might differ if it were over here:

DS (4yo) is loving the idea of time machines. I said to him and DP, "oh, we should watch Back to the Future together!" DP starts grimacing and saying not for a few years yet and giving me the "let's talk about that later" look. Only after discussing it later did I remember that the plot is (SPOILER ALERT) I need to go back in time to save my mother from being date-raped at the prom. Wow.

Then there's that delightful scene in License to Drive where the Coreys are taking sexual photos of a young Heather Graham while she's passed out from alcohol. Hilarious! confused

The Beatles are my favourite band but there's a lot of lyrics in there I don't want my kids hearing. The oft cited Run For Your Life is just one of many examples.

Is anyone else a bit shocked at the stuff we used to watch? I mean mostly in regard to sexism/sexual violence but all discussion welcome.

At 8/9 I was desperate to read my mum's copy of 'Mommy Dearest' (also with a Christina and Christopher), thinking it sounded like a lovely story about how nice mummies are. My mum always seemed to have 'misplaced' it when I asked - finally got my hands on it and had a rude awakening. I now don't allow wire hangers in the house either!

Actually the doctor almost as bad! Isn’t she 15 and he keeps saying things like “I’m a good person but I’m just a man.”

Honestly I was gobsmacked re-reading them all.

Oh Yes! Paul's awful too - the clothes he buys her, even before they are engaged. And Julian (husband no 1) is horrendously abusive. I don't remember that Bart treats her particularly badly, but then he is cheating on his wife with a younger version of her (admittedly he doesn't realise Cathy is Corrine's daughter, but he's still a cheat.)

I don't think there are any actual good people in those books. The mother and the grandmother are meant to be these terrible baddies- but all the goodies are pretty repugnant as well.

The first time they have sex Bart rapes her! I swear it impacted how I dealt with sexual assaults that happened to me in subsequent years. I honestly didn’t view them as ‘that bad’.

The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey.

I absolutely loved them as a tween, went to re-read them recently and gave up partway through the first in disgust. So rapey.

I don't remember that! Jeezus that poor woman knew some terrible men in her lifetime!

Indiana Jones :(

In the first film it's mentioned a couple of times that Marian was a child when he became involved with her. So he's a paedo.

The second film is quite racist about the Indians, and horribly misogynistic.
