Hope this link works:

www.parliament.uk/business/publications/business-papers/commons/early-day-motions/edm-detail1/?edmnumber=355&session=2017-19

Please have a look. If your MP is on there, is it worth another quick email to them? A link to BetsyM00's amazing resource thread?

I feel a bit sick now, like the bit in Indiana Jones where the huge ball drops and starts to roll.

Sorry, my lady brain can't do links, but the Daily Mail is covering a speech that Theresa May has made on making it easier to trans.

DrRisotto · 19/10/2017 10:06

Did you really mean to say 'lady brain' as a reason for being unable to post a link?
Hate to pick on your language there misscockerspaniel but hell, if I can't do it in the feminism section where can I?

misscockerspaniel · 19/10/2017 10:11

No, I was taking the piss out of "lady penis" Grin. Still can't do links, though. The Daily Telegraph is also covering the story.

MacaroonMama · 19/10/2017 10:11

Blanchefleur wow, that is the government's findings that are being ignored then? Good for us to show that these "facts" are actually not facts at all. Hopefully if we can show that, the house of cards will start to fall (think am meeting my MP tomorrow so this will help me)...

Fuck. This is awful. I think it's Theresa May trying to deflect attention from the car crash that is Brexit, and women will pay the price.

hingedspeculum · 19/10/2017 10:17

Early day motions are known as "parliamentary graffiti'; they are a self-congratulatory exercise in getting a couple of signatures that lobbying groups can cite. They are almost never ever debated, it'll stay with 21 signatures and then disappear into the archives. This EDM is referencing the Women and Equalities Committee and their bill, which is an issue, but the EDM standing alone doesn't really mean anything.

With that being the case, I'm still perplexed at the hate crime reference.
Blanchefleur, I looked at the report as well - where on earth have they derived that from? Another survey of 27 participants?

Elendon · 19/10/2017 10:36

And how does self-ID lead to less discrimination and assault?

Is the million dollar question Jelly. Absolutely spot on!

Oh and it's not up to me to answer it. I'm not trans. I suspect you won't be getting a response to that perfect question anytime soon. I can only suggest that those countries that do have self ID have seen a dramatic decrease in minority hate crimes.

misscockerspaniel · 19/10/2017 10:38

Whilst early day motions are rarely debated, I do not believe it to be a coincidence that Theresa May has just delivered a speech on this topic, vowing to change the law (- on something that was not in the Tory manifesto). MacaroonMama, I also feel a bit sick. The clock is ticking.

Elendon · 19/10/2017 10:40

Also the assault on transgender women only is very telling about who exactly is being supported when it comes to trans issues.

It's men.

Elendon · 19/10/2017 10:43

MissCockerSpaniel To quote Sherlock Holmes:

'One should always be suspicious of coincidences'

Stopmakingsense · 19/10/2017 11:17

Parliament website says that early day motions are rarely debated - they are primarily used to raise awareness.
It would be great to have a different motion sponsored in parliament- to support transgender rights in the context of maintaining women-only spaces; allowing medical professionals to make clinical judgements about medical treatment based on research and evidence; protection for gender non-conforming children and young people from bullying and unnecessary medical intervention.

How about David Davies? Anyone in his constituency?

It's amazing what you get when you flop out a cock. Women have been living with violence forever and it is generally accepted that to be female is to be assaulted, raped and murdered (because of our sex) and we are also accused of exaggerating, making up stories and 'asking for it'. However, men taking on stereotypical feminine characteristics are judged to be at risk of the same crimes that women have been the victims of since forever and OMG Something Is Done. The power of the penis - its here folks!

MacaroonMama · 19/10/2017 12:25

Glad that people on here know better than me about matters of law! I think the phrase "Early Day Motion" meant that they were considering bringing the changes forward or something! Ok so I won't panic just yet.

Stopmakingsense yes I like that idea. Wonder if Jess Phillips would be able/willing to do something like that? I hear she gets on with Jacob Rees-Mogg (obvs v different viewpoints but I read that they are quite friendly) so maybe it could be cross-party? David Davies could join in too.

How can they sign something that is so directly contradicted by government report published 2 days ago! The mind boggles. Massively disappointed in Caroline Lucas and Angela Eagle especially.

How does it work writing to MPs who are not your constituency MP or a member of your party?

Stopmakingsense · 19/10/2017 13:12

Serendipity. If you have an amenable MP, write to them and ask them to raise it with the relevant MP. Or write to the MP in their role in parliament (e.g. Chair or member of select committee).

Elendon · 19/10/2017 14:14

You can write to an MP who isn't your constituency MP, but they are not obliged to reply to you (and most don't).

ArcheryAnnie · 19/10/2017 16:19

That assault stat is bullshit. This is from the home office:

ArcheryAnnie · 19/10/2017 16:25

I am genuinely going to write a thank you letter to David Davies, StopMakingSense. I disagree with him on almost everything else you could imagine, but he's spot-on on this.

christinarossetti · 19/10/2017 16:40

The number of reported hate crimes towards people with disabilities has risen the most, I see.

This group of people also experience the largest number of violent attacks against their person.

Given that some TAs considered a group of radical feminists meeting to speak about the implications of the GRA Bill to be a 'hate crime', I'm surprised that the numbers of reported hate crimes against transgendered people is so low tbh.

ChattyLion · 20/10/2017 07:12

^This. YetAnother totally summed it up.
It's breathtaking that women are forced to accept this and that male violence must not be challenged.

Also agree with PP that this outbreak of sympathy from the PM is most likely convenient political distraction issue in the face of the looming Brexit pileup.

Thank goodness a few MPs are talking sense about this! I will also be writing to mine. Thanks to everyone posting the correct statistics etc which I will include- its so offensive that others' vulnerabilities are being overlooked and misrepresented in this campaign. Really important that MPs get the truth and to see the impact this will have on girls and women..

IrenetheQuaint · 20/10/2017 07:15

As I understand it the new Gender Identity Bill is scheduled for the current parliamentary session (2017-19) so yes we should start to worry.

ChattyLion · 20/10/2017 07:20

While we're at it, there is this petition going round:
