Chalkboard outside Belfast pub

Facebook link

I hope this link works. The post is public but I think you need a FB account to see it.

Anyone not wishing to click, I have included a screenshot.

This is a Belfast pub and their chalkboard today says "you can beat the wife, but you can't beat a £5 lunch"

As expected they have had a massive response to this on their FB page with people voicing their disgust and anger. Is this inciting violence? Worth reporting to PSNI?

I can't get past the fact that this was just a stones throw from women's aid. This pub will have known that and yet still gone ahead and written that "joke" for abused women to walk past and see. That's sick. There's something scary about a person who would do that.

It's an absolute disgrace and what's more abhorrent is the pitiful defence and normalisation of it. Could you imagine a woman suffering from DV walking past that sign? The PTSD that it could set off? What's even more worrying is the type of animal that will see this and use it as justification for their actions. It's appalling! I just can't believe it!

Not sure if that will work but it's a link to the Belfast Telegraph thread on Facebook where they discuss it.... some of the comments aren't great.

BackieJerkhart · 27/09/2017 12:45

I have been reading a few comments on the Belfast live comments on FB. There is one from someone saying she witnessed last night the pub manager drunk offering free shots to already drunk "girls" (I'm assuming young women) to come into the pub and also harrassing a distressed woman who had been separated from her friends.

Someone on facebook has said that a company on the mainland have 'Ribs and Bibs' trademarked and are not too happy about their name being stolen.

StaySexyDontGetMurdered · 27/09/2017 12:54

There was something similar near my area. someone complained to the ASA and their complaint was upheld. I don't think there was much of a repercussion for the pub but it was helpful to get the point across that you can not advertise like that.

Just had a message from Trip Advisor. They're not going to publish my review Hmm

Silverthorn · 27/09/2017 13:13

Utter dipshits.
I would be egging the place if I lived nearby and of course it would never get my custom.

Elendon · 27/09/2017 14:51

I rang Queen's University and they have assured me that they would not allow advertising in the Student's Union.

The latest update is very disturbing.

Jailed for 15 years.

Never mind. So long as you get your lunch for a fiver.

The real issue is that most people, even the really dim ones, wouldn't make such a 'joke' about beating an animal, or any sort of racist assault. But still, domestic violence and violence against women isn't 'real' violence.
This quote from 1850:
"It is not their wife or child? Are they not entitled to do was they will with their own? These phrases are not, to their apprehension, metaphorical. The shoes on their feet, the cudgel in their hand, the horse or ass that carries their burden, the wife and children, all are "theirs" and all in the same sense."

It would be hilarious if they're cheap publicity ended with them losing their name and business. The manager sounds like a disgusting human

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/09/2017 22:34

The UK company joined in the Twitter storm. They were not happy.

Oh. Snookums.
