Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Just read mis article about masculinity. His summary would be at home on the most TERFy blog pages:

A masculinity which includes being good at that work might be one worth preserving. As things stand, I wonder what the words ‘masculinity’ and ‘femininity’ really contain except remnants of daft stereotypes about how humans are supposed to behave because of the way their genitals are arranged. Sex is real, gender is a story. Whatever our sex, we should be free to write our own story.

Men and women are different of course, but only when we’re naked. The rest is advertising.

I'm wondering when the calls to have him no-platformed and threats that he should just die in a fire will start.... Wink

He speaks the truth and I wish more people would think like this.

Ha!

ImSorryAuntLydia · 11/09/2017 03:38

His book is very good. References Cordelia Fine at one point. And he has acknowledged, on Twitter at least, that he is getting/will get a whole lot less shit for saying this kind of stuff than women get.

He seems a good 'un, in general.

ImSorryAuntLydia · 11/09/2017 03:46

From my reading of his book, I think his wife has done a lot of the work of dragging him out of the standard lefty-male viewpoint of I'm a good person who believes in equality, therefore I cannot be sexist, even though oops, it seems I'm checking out of family life and my wife is picking up all the slack. I hope he is now doing the work and not just talking the talk.

Iwannasnack · 11/09/2017 04:53

Agree he seems a good 'un. I'm listening to the audiobook when I run at the moment. Love him on twitter too. Sad that it's only when a man starts saying this stuff that people listen.

Does his book imply that it's his wife who has 'educated' him, as opposed to his own reading and sense of fairness?

ImSorryAuntLydia · 11/09/2017 07:18

It reads like he was being a bit of a twat in the early days of parenthood (partially as a result of issues with his own parents) and she had to be fairly assertive to point out a few things to him. Credit to him that he was receptive, god knows the boards here are evidence of many men who aren't, but it's not as simple as he was a good feminist man who has come to these conclusions by himself. A lot of his book is about his journey getting there. Like I said, it's very good, and very insightful.

Heard him on Radio4 and reading the book now. Its really interesting, would recommend.

ShoesHaveSouls · 11/09/2017 07:32

I love him. He got a lot of abuse for an article he wrote (yonks ago) which was very critical of the men's rights movement. He's a good'un.

EyesUnderARock · 11/09/2017 09:39

Sometimes it's near impossible to see your own privilege, you need someone who doesn't have it to point it out to you and firmly suggest what needs to change. The bit that shows you aren't an arse is where you don't protest and bluster, you say 'Ohhh. OK'

DeleteOrDecay · 11/09/2017 09:43

I love him even more now!

Yes, so very few people are capable of this.

Absolutely, just saying, his wife (her name is Abigail Burgess) seems pretty cool too Smile

ImSorryAuntLydia · 11/09/2017 11:02

Burdess, not Burgess.

NotAgainYoda · 11/09/2017 20:00

I loved his book. Very funny. Very sad.

BorisTrumpsHair · 11/09/2017 20:12

He is brilliant. Let's clone him Grin

Seriously though, he has been all over the media and everything he is saying is wonderful. I will read his book.

RedBlackberries · 11/09/2017 20:14

I can't wait to read his book. I started a thread on this and how much I fancy him in AIBU the other day. He speaks the truth.

WhereYouLeftIt · 12/09/2017 00:33

Heard him read extracts of his book on Radio 4; as a child he was on the receiving end of toxic masculinity. Good to see him break the cycle.

, written by his wife.
